Superb
4 year update: I am still utterly impressed and love this watch. After 4 years of dedicated service, I've experienced zero issues, no scratches on the bezel, no issues with the band, original battery is still running fine. Also, I receive more compliments from this watch than any of my other watches combined, some of my them costing 10X the price of this one. Again, I will say that you will stand out from the crowd with this one. It is simple, clean and bold, unlike anything anyone else will be wearing in the office or out for an evening.Original review: I love this watch and I treated myself after accepting a new job. The first time I wore this I received nothing but praise for how great and how European it looked! It is big on my wrist, but I must have skinny wrists. I DO NOT think this looks tacky BIG like some watches out there. This is clean, big and classic looking. Very unique indeed.

The watch itself: very cool. Five stars.
One star off for the short band. The typical men's band is about 120 mm + 80 mm. The band that comes with this watch is 114 mm + 74 mm. Moreover, the pin mounts are set close together across the back of the case, further limiting the reach of the strap. My wrist is about 190 mm or 7.5 inches, and I'm comfortable with a 120/80 mm band on just about all of my watches. With the Mondaine band, however, I need to use the third-to-last hole on the strap, which leaves a very short stub indeed. Really, the band is too short for me.One additional star off for misinformation about the band's width. The specs for the Mondaine Giant say it has a 20 mm band. In truth, the band is 20 mm at the buckle but 22 mm at the lugs. I ordered replacement bands of the wrong size and had to return them. Not good. And yes, in fact you can use aftermarket straps. I've attached a flat strap similar to the original. Not all bands will work. In general, thinner is better. To be honest, I had to experiment a little to find the right band but soon enough found a pretty good one. This link below is for the replacement band I found. It's very similar to the original. The original tapers from 22mm to 20mm at the buckle, however, and this one does not, making it impossible to install the Mondaine buckle on this band. Still, it's a nice strap.http://www.amazon.com/dp/B015489A62/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=1NON74EU6SHQ3&coliid=IWORKF4V490YGAlso, I've ordered an original Mondaine extra long band from a retail store in England. We'll see how that works out...I see that one reviewer attached a NATO style strap to his watch. I, however, had great difficulty with both leather and nylon straps – the thinnest I could find – and fearing I would bend or break the pins, I've given up on the idea of using a NATO strap on this watch.Mine was running when it arrived. Clearly the package had been opened and the watch handled. Nonetheless, it was in perfect condition. It came in its original boxes with its warranty, manual, tag, the plastic film still covering the crystal and the case back, and all the expected packaging, etc. This was a "Ships from and sold by Amazon.com" item, so we don't know the original seller. In any case, I feel satisfied that I have purchased a brand-new watch. The watch itself: very cool. Five stars.Update: The extra long Mindaine band arrived from England, and it is – ahem – too long. Funny…

A fantastic minimalist watch with Swiss movement at a great price
I had ordered this from Amazon, but my package was stolen and I ended up purchasing from a local watch shop.Mondaine, as advertised, makes watch variants of the iconic Swiss railway clocks. This design is a timeless (lol) and minimalistic one, and that is exemplified in the "giant" model by the lugless design and simple leather band. For 175$, this is a good quartz-timed Swiss watch. My only additional desire would be a sapphire dial cover, but this isn't a super expensive watch, and the hardened mineral glass is definitely very scratch resistant.Props to Mondaine for the build quality - the band is tight and supple, with a strong buckle, and the crown is firmly set into the case, where the hands line up perfectly with the hour and minute indicators.

Stops working after 6 months
Not even 6 months of owning it, it has stopped working. I'm hoping it is just the battery, but something's definitely wrong. It's in perfect condition outside, never dropped, and yet it just dies. It looks great and the fit is great, but this has really been off putting for this brand. I will probably stay away from Mondaine watches in the future.

Sooooooo hübsch! *)

Glad I bought one
Mondaine Giant watchBefore buying this watch, I spent a considerable time assessing which watches Mondaine make, which ones I liked the most, and the respective availability and prices of those models.Deliberations about what permutations of day and date I wanted, I settled on a plain face. Whilst it is nice to have extensive functionality on a watch, there are chronographs, digital watches, smart phones, and even apple watches for that sort of thing. These watches mimic a design icon, the Swiss railway clock; with that in mind, a plain, striking uninterrupted face is what I chose.Further choice is presented when choosing whether you would like a lugged or lugless watch body. Again, appreciative of the minimalistic aesthetic of the Swiss railway clock, I plumped for the giant, the only lugless model available. The final decision was strap colour. White would get too grubby or require too much cleaning, red seems unavailable on the giant; black was he only remaining option, not that a brightly coloured strap or metal bracelet would enhance the appeal of this beguiling watch. On delivery day, the opening process was a treat. The box is bold black and white, weighty item, with red accents. The lid lifts back to reveal the striking black and white face of your new watch, accented only by the mighty, bulbous red second hand and a tiny red rectangle beneath the Mondaine motif.Removing the watch from the box, the bright body is pleasingly heavy without being cumbersome. It too is accented by a single point of red, the enamelled red crown with an `M' in silver. In contrast to the bold body, the strap is thin, fine, supple and elegant, seemingly disappearing beneath the giant face of the watch.Putting the watch on, I was slightly dismayed to find that the strap only did up on the penultimate hole. My wrist is 20cm / 7.9" around. Men, or even women with larger wrists than me would need to buy a new 22mm leather strap that is longer than the original. This expense is not ideal but shouldn't put you off of buying the watch. Both Amazon and eBay offer a bounty of straps to fit this watch. The short `tail' pulled through the buckle of the strap means that the second, floating keeper I obsolete, perhaps I will remove it.Adjusting the time on the watch is easy enough but the crown can feel very small and slippery as it lacks any knurling or texture. The large, lightly domed glass atop the watch insures an unobstructed view of the beautiful face of the watch. My only worry is that it is the highest point of the watch and may become scratched or damaged if rubbed or bashed into things like walls and door frames. Durability is only established over time, but I haven't read of anyone breaking one yet...Whilst I have tried to be as honest as I can, picking up all faults where possible, really, there aren't any. They are minor niggles that can be worked around. I bought this watch because it is aesthetically unique and completely different from my usual watches (Casio G-shocks). I bought this watch because I can't think of an occasion or event where it wouldn't be acceptable to wear it; for that reason it represents good value to me at just over £150 (considering what could be spent on a `smart' watch). I bought this watch on the strength of the reviews I have read. Finally, I treated myself to this watch as I have wanted one for a long time and I am extremely pleased with it.PS In a half hour lunch break, I got two compliments on the watch - which was nice...
