Great read
This is how a technical book should be written. It's a nice middle ground for those of us who don't want to read a pure technical book, but has really great information. Definitely better than The Design of the UNIX Operating System. That book put me to sleep after 1 chapter. I think the two books complement each other, but unless you're a die hard Linux nerd or someone who really needs to know the exact details of how the UNIX OS works, I'd recommend Modern Operating Systems. I'm an Android Dev, and there's a great chapter about Android.

Very easy read as the OS concepts and more are explained very well!!!
Thanks to my embedded/real-time OS instructor for recommending this book for our reference. The book is amazing and very easy read as the OS concepts are explained very well. The author(s) goes to a deep level and covers several topics including Virtualization and Cloud and Security. He also has a case study of Unix/Linux/Android and Windows 8. I highly recommend buying this book, reading it and owning it!!!

Buy it if you really need it or like the subject very much.
I guess I bought this books for the wrong reasons, being other than to learn the matter -in depth. Nonetheless I can tell the content is very thorough (what would you expect from a 1000+ pages book?) and that mr. Tanembaum a referent is on the OS area. Interestingly enough one of the first insights for the potential reader is that actually most chapters are written by someone else other than Andrew. The only reason I'm giving 4 stars is that I bought it 2nd hand, and is a bit worn, and had to pay dearly to import it where I currently live .

A must have book!
Great book, well written and covers a ton. Quality of the global edition is perfect. Not going into detail on the content, just wanted to say I have no regrets getting the less expensive global edition. After posting this review for the global edition I see that it shows up for the paperback non-global edition. Looks like an even better deal at $25 vs $50 for the global. Somehow I missed that when I placed my order but was glad to not have to shell out $175 for the hard cover version!

The college book money scam continues. Take advantage of college kids and their student loans! As long as submissive college kids continue to let themselves be abused by the system, this book will continue to cost $150.

Too theoretical. No implementation.
I think the book is overrated.Note that although it has very good explanation, it doesn't contain any implementation details. My recommendation is "Operating Systems Design and Implementation" by Tanenbaum (same author). The difference of two books ("Modern OS" vs "OS Design and Imp") are1. Appendix"Modern OS" has case study (still theoretical) of Window and Linux systems in later chapters, while "OS Design and Imp" has C code of Minix in Appendix.2. Contents"Modern OS" gives more detail explanations and better flow, while "OS Design and Imp" covers only essentials in concise manner. (compact, essential coverage)In general, I suggest "OS Design and Imp" for general audience.I would say "Modern OS" might be more useful, ONLY if the reader have strong low-level programming skills.
