Nice pictures
Photos taken on a 4 day trip to the area. Due to that, there are many similar photos, like the ones from the Pachislo parlours. The photos don't have captions, which is a shame because we don't know what we are seeing (although some are self explanatory). The texts throughout the book are either the author bragging for the opportunity she had by going there, or some quotes that don't bring anything new to our knowledge. The positive part of the book is that almost, if not all the places that are photographed are untouched and haven't been vandalised. No graffitis not stolen goods. If you are in it just for the pictures go for it.

I liked parts of this book
I liked parts of this book. The pictures are haunting and well composed. The pictures show a range of sites within the Fukushima exclusion zone, shops, a school and streets. All capture the emptiness of the area. There is a short amount of text explaining the author's experience. There are quotations and Japanese terms that capture aspects of the disaster and its aftermath. Sitting looking at the photographs reminds me of what can happen when a, in particular our, civilization ceases. For me, as a study of the disaster it falls short. I was disappointed that the pictures did not have captions, so in some cases I was left guessing at the picture subject. I would have liked to see a map showing where the photographs were taken in relation to the Dai-Ichi power plant and the colured exclusion zones. I would have liked some explanation of the significance of some of the picture, for instance why is cherry blossom (the cover photograph) significant in Japanse culture?Overall I would have liked more contextual information to knit together the photographs and fill-out the story the author is telling.
