Insanely good for a portable
I did a lot a lot of research of every catagory of portable espresso makers from the practically free to the 9Barista which costs nearly $800. I'm not a camper. I just like small, well-designed things. The Staresso Plus SP300 produces insanely good shots with rich crema and layers of subtle flavors. I'm using organic, mycotoxin free beans both medium-light and medium-dark roast. I don't yet have a good coffee grinder (it's on the way), but even just using a good blade grinder, the results are exceptional. It's a breeze to set up, use and clean. Plus, it has a kind of steampunk vibe. Wish it came in colors other than black, but really, for the price and design and result, it's pretty perfect.

Received a used product
UPDATE 5/2/23: I received communication about my user product from the seller in a timely manner. I learned there was an error somewhere along the line that they have now corrected so that it shouldn't be able to happen in the future. They also offered me a choice of gift to apologize for the situation.I am now the happy owner of a Staresso Tamper that fits perfectly in the basket of this machine and tamps beautifully. I am very impressed with their customer service and that they don't expect a change of review or rating. I have used the tamper and espresso maker daily for about a month now and am very pleased with the shots I get. Fresh grinds are very important, I bought some fresh at Starbucks and had them grind them in store on the espresso grind setting. It has been working very well and is tasty in my white chocolate mochas and peppermint mochas. Cleaning is very straightforward and similar to the smaller size machine which I had before and so I have been very happy about that. Overall from customer service to use of product to design of product I am very satisfied and happy that I made the purchase after all. Side note I live in a slightly off grid RV living and feel this is very easy to use whether it be camping or at home or anything in between I love that this portable of a machine has been made!!! I was really looking forward to having this because I already own and have loved my Staresso Basic espresso maker for a year or so now. I really need the larger machine to make my coffee every day without having to clean it out between shots to make myself enough( I like a 18-20oz mocha)and was thrilled to discover they make this size when I was looking at ordering a second basic... So I was really excited but upon opening it for the first time I saw coffee grounds and moisture inside of it. Such a disappointment after how much this product cost and how excited I was to have the larger machine. I have reached out to customer service to see about getting a new machine that has NOT been used and will update my review once I have (hopefully) sorted this out.

Great value for price!
Pleasantly surprised at the espresso quality, the crema is properly oily and the pressure is pretty accurate. However it cannot fit quite enough coffee in the basket for 1 cup of espresso, more about 0.85 cups (I couldn't fit more than 16 grams of coffee). I have worries about the durability of the pump mechanism, it is clear that the various seals will erode, but hopefully it's slow. Very good value though!

This is it. The little espresso maker.
Wow, this is... Something else. Actually portable. You will need to acquire some fine grounds, near-boiling water and a tamper, but otherwise the whole kit's here. The quality of the espresso is comparable to that of a good quality espresso machine, offering significant value far surpassing its weight and size. One, two or three shots of 60 mL of actual espresso with crema are available without hard work in under two minutes (not including water boiling time). Additionally, I believe the time until these shots die off (go bitter and bland) is around 20-30 seconds, which is a few seconds better than some $x,xxx machines can manage. Mix it with something iced quickly to stop it cooking itself for a softer flavor, or if you like strong espresso flavor, enjoy at your leisure. I'm more of a coffee drinker so I throw mine over ice with vanilla almond milk and no sugar. Anyway... How to use: Set up device by folding out the legs, pulling the cup off the bottom, unscrewing the pump, unscrewing the filter and filling the grounds reservoir. I use about 19-20 grams of grounds, ground until a dust (more than for coffee or aeropress), but not a powder (espresso machine). Pile those grounds into reservoir. Tamp the grounds pushing down and flattening to get an even fill. Put the filled grounds reservoir back on the device, screwing it firmly but not so tight you think you won't be able to take it off. Pour near-boiling water (205-210 preferably) in the water reservoir, then replace the pump/lid. You know how most manual devices require you to preheat the water reservoir so it doesn't suck heat out the water? You don't have to do that with this device due to the double walled insulated water reservoir. If your water is 212 F (100C)going in, it'll be 205-210 (96-98C) once shut. Ensure your cup is under the device and start pumping. Should take a good 10-20 pumps to start coming out. I don't pump too quickly in fear the hot espresso may spray out. If your grounds are not packed well, it may also cause spraying as water and air break through the grounds and out the drip nozzle. Once you hear air come out the dripper, that's your cue to enjoy your espresso. Forcing the last few drops may give your espresso an oiliness and sourness. The device itself has built in measurements to make 60, 120 and 180 mL of espresso at a time. Most manual presses allow only one shot, maybe two. This does better. For $100 you get a premium feeling device, that folds up and fits in a backpack easily. I repurposed a camera bag and easily fit a small can of beans, a grinder and the staresso to take with me to work. This is an excellent purchase regardless of your budget if you are looking into getting an espresso machine. You will treasure this.

The Sandworm Thumper Espresso Machine
Awesome little device for making espresso! It’s got a Dune sandworm thumper look to it, so it’s got that going for it. I got the Staresso bottomless filter basket along with various other 53mm puck prep tools. It’s a lot of stuff to buy but it will help you make better espresso and easier too Preheat everything with some hot water. It will help reduce or eliminate sourness in your cup I found that tamping around 15 pounds is enough for the SP300 I use Third Wave Water mixed in distilled water produces a nice traditional cup of espresso I also use a puck screen to help distribute the water more evenly and a paper filter on the bottom of the filter basket as well Seems like a lot for a simple cup of espresso doesn’t it? Well you’d need the same for other espresso machines too and I want to give the SP300 every chance to produce a good cup of espresso As you can see, after my 4th shot, I was producing a nice dry puck and a good tasting espresso as well. It was about 18g of coffee with about 38g out in 38 seconds I may have to pump faster lol I was rewarded with a wonderfully intense chocolate flavor and with some frothed milk, perfection I’m a beginner when it comes to making espresso. This was my 4th cup this week trying to dial it in. SP300 is probably fairly forgiving with medium dark/dark roasts. I’m sure it may be more of a challenge with lighter roasts. We’ll see

Almost great.
Really disappointed that under the steel brew chamber liner, there is plastic that seems to come into contact with hot water. Did some digging and found a source that claimed the plastic is BPA free, but nowhere did I find that claimed on the packaging. It’s black plastic that reminds me of cheap kitchen utensils. Regardless of claims to food safety, my reason for purchasing the Staresso was to find an affordable manual espresso maker that eliminated plastic from making contact with the coffee. They almost got it. Every other contact part is metal. Would have kept it otherwise.

A great machine
Although I've only used it twice so far, I've been very pleased with the Starpresso Mirage. It really does make proper espresso with a nice crema. The device is very solidly build and quite satisfying to use. Kudos to the engineers who designed it and built it. It attains high pressures by using a manual pump to pressurize the hot water chamber before the water is released to the coffee grounds in the filter basket. It can attain the high pressures promised because the pump has a small diameter piston in a small diameter cylinder. That means that the force needed to move the piston remains manageable even when the hot water chamber has risen to a quite high pressures. Because of small diameter, you have to apply many strokes to the pump to arrive at the high pressure. I need 30 to 40 for the full cycle. At 1-2 seconds a stroke, that does not take long. I have no means to measure the pressure, so I cannot say if the extraordinarily high pressure claimed of 15-20 bar is achieved. Electric machines operate at lower pressures, such as 9 bar. These are high pressures 1 bar is of the order of one atmosphere of pressure. The pressurized water is not released to the coffee grounds until a valve downstream of the water/coffee senses a high enough pressure. That means that the pressure is sustained not by resistance to the flow of hot water through the coffee bed but by the operation of the valve. The advantage is that the successful extraction of an espresso shot is relatively insensitive to the fineness of the grind. However an appropriately fine grind should still be used since a coarsely ground coffee may not be extracted well. Clean up is a little messy. The device overall is hot and the filter basket full of wet coffee grounds. The clean up involves more mess than merely knocking out the puck into a knockout box from a filter basket using its handle, as is the way with countertop espresso machines. There is no handle and my pucks have been a little soupy. It's nothing that bothers me too much. Be ready for errant grounds on the work surface. Overall, it is a great machine that does what it promises to do.

Pump failed within a month.
This Espresso Press is a huge waste of money and I would not recommend purchasing it. At first it functioned perfectly fine and I was able to get about a month of espresso from it. Sadly, after my return window closed, the pump mechanism started to fail, increasing the time it took for the chamber to reach equilibrium and allow for another pump. This caused the brew time to make one shot of espresso to go from about 2-3 min to 10-15 min. As you can imagine after 10-15 min of brew time both the water in the chamber and the espresso in your cup are close to room temperature. Additionally, if you do make the mistake of buying this product don't make the mistake of purchasing the accessory filter basket. Even on day one the pump mechanism was not capable of pushing water through the grounds at a high enough pressure to achieve espresso level extraction. Note: I was only making one batch of espresso per day and I did follow the instructions provided. My conclusion is that though this product is easy to use and at first had a great brew time either my specific purchase was defective or the product line is defective. either way I would not purchase again, nor recommend this company to anyone else. I did reach out to Staresso to see if they have a replacement program for damaged/defective parts, they kindly offered to give me an "Exclusive Link" to purchase the replacements, the link was to their website where they have replacement parts on sale under "Accessories," which I had already viewed.

Excellent
Why did you choose this product over others?: I’ve used most hand espresso machines. This provides an exceptionally consistent result. Brilliant and much less complicated than many. It is still super important to have a good grinder and setting and I wish it came with a tamper (most use the pump handle). Genuinely v v impressive

What can we say ?
It exceeds all expectations. It’s simply a great, portable, quality espresso maker. + great crema + very portable + easy to make an espresso on the go or at home - a lot of small pieces makes it dangerous to wash and lose one of them - the coffee container stay in the tray and it can burn you when you disassemble
