Review: Harry Potter to movies, now Death Note to movies - I went into this movies somewhat similar to how i went into the Harry Potter films. I went in thinking it would be line for line image for image. And when I got about a third into it i was mistaken. Now I feel that Death Note, the live-action film gave the Manga/Anime the credit it needed. It followed the characters and the basic story line. It also did change some key elements. Such as Raye's wife, and his girlfriend. But in all understanding it made sense. To do this made it more time effective. If you are coming into this movie expecting it to be the anime series with real people, you shall be sadly mistaken the film running at 120 minutes would never be able to cover 37 twenty-two minute episodes in that time frame. thus it was broken up into about 4 hours compressing the story and trying to keep it's key elements. I have yet to see Death Note: The Last Name, but I hope to soon purchase it and see how they do the rendition for the rest of the story. Review: One of Japans Great movie!!! - I love Death Note... I wish that desertcart had more popular Japanese movies to select from very few and far in between. This movie is really good sugest you watch Death Note first . Great cast and story line . For me personally I think if your under 45 you will live if you like drama mystery with a bit if Anime like our American Marvel Charachter ... A Must Have for any fan of the manga and anime series.
The Live action version of Death Note definitely shows the side of Light Yagami they couldn't show on the anime series. Having Light as a college student was a much better choice than what the manga and the anime series had him as a high school which a more creepy scary element to it. This Light is simply sick and tired of the way the Japanese Police Department was treating their criminals and not giving them a much harsher punishment. In this film, you cheer for Light than jeer him like in the series.

Decent
Pretty fun but hold a candle to the original story. The acting is good and it had some really great potential with some of the plot lines and the characters, but it tried to do too much and didn't spend enough time developing any one character enough for them to live up to their full potential. Also less mind games and more action. A slow first half and then a million twists in the second half.

WILLEM DAFOE WAS A GREAT CHOICE AS RYUK.
TOO AMERICANIZED. It would probably be most enjoyable for someone who is unfamiliar with the Manga and/or Anime.

Having enjoyed the death note manga and anime series, I was eager to watch the first live action feature length movie. For those who are not familiar with the story, death note is about a 17 year old genius named Light Yagami who comes across a death note dropped by a shinigami/God of death. The person who's name is written in the mysterious notebook will die. Light takes it upon himself to use the death note to cleanse the world of criminals and create a utopia world which he will be God of. As criminals begin dying all around the world, the police take desperate action and employ the help of the detective 'L' who has never appeared in public, yet has solved every case he has been given. What ensues is a battle of wits between two geniuses, filled with plenty of twists and turns that will keep you glued to your screen. Moreover, this movie makes the viewer think about whether Lights killings are justified or whether he is just a murderer. It also makes us ponder the idea of what we would do if we came into possesion of a death note. It is an interesting concept that has actually become a phenomenon worldwide and has therefore led to Death Note's immensely popular cult status. During Light's killing spree, he is accompanied by the shinigami called Ryuk, who previously owned the death note. This creepy looking character acts as the spectator to Light and L's battle, while also creating some light comic relief. This movie sticks closely to the original plot of the manga, yet there are quite a few minor and major differences. A major difference would be that Light has a girlfriend. This addition creates an interesting watch for fans of the series as it offers a different take on the death note story. Newcomers will feel equally at home as you do not have to watch the manga or anime to understand this. This movie, being the first of two parts leaves the viewer wanting more, with a brilliant ending that is original to the movie, yet is still really entertaining. It was particularly enjoyable to watch this movie and be surprised by a completely new ending. This movie boasts a solid performance from famed Japanese actor Tatsuya Fujiwara (Battle Royale, Sabu) who plays Light. Furthermore, the actor who plays L, Kenichi Matsuyama, brings the unique character to life brilliantly. As far as music goes in this film, Red Hot Chilli Pepper fans will be happy because the the main theme song for this movie is Dani California. At just over 2 hours, this movie is slightly overlong, yet is still undeniably gripping throughout. The death note movies are likely to attract many fans of the asian film genre, yet the anime series is far superior in my opinion. So if you enjoy this then it's worth checking the series out, as well as the original source manga. After watching this movie I'm looking forward to seeing the second live action installment, as well as the spin off movie.

Death note was a great film. It was a very different idea executed in a very clever way. There was much to admire about this film in every way; from the story, to the cinematography to the acting - everything about it worked. The cat and mouse story kept you gripped and you had no idea what was coming next. Lines were drawn and boundaries blurred, and you were never sure who you should be routing for as the good guy was an oddball and the baddy was as a good person who did bad things for the right reasons. The acting too was excellent throughout, with L's character being played particularly well in a twisted, freaky, kooky way which I thought really worked. The CGI demon - or Death God - looks a bit dodge by today's CGI standards, but as far as the creature design goes, he's pretty cool, and another great example of a character in the film who leaves you unsure what side of the fences he's on... good or bad. The twists are many and you don't see them coming and overall there was nothing I didn't like about this film. If I had to pick wholes I'd say that the subtitles could have been translated a bit better in one or two places and there was a scene towards the end (with a girl, Misa Misa, and a Death Note) that left me puzzled, however, all is quickly revealed in Death Note 2. A quick look at my waiting Death Note 2 dvd box, and things started to make sense. Death Note 2 [DVD] [2006] Also the DVD was very light on extras. There were non basically with just the trailers and a weblink if you put the DVD in a PC. Boring and a real shame, as there was so much they could have done with documentaries on the CGI Death Gods or its original Manga roots. Still, even with the lack of extras I can't force myself to give this film anything other than 5 stars. Verdict: Make a note of it. Everything about it worked. A great film that was super cool. One to 'note'. That's enough puns for one review.

The is the movie I wanted to have since I borrowed a copy in a library. So, yes, I love the movie, I wish though that it would have also an English audio. There are English subtitles so you can understand what they are talking about, still, it is the kind of movie, I want to watch rather than constantly looking at the subtitles whenever the actors are speaking. It is the only reason I gave 4 stars and not 5. The rest was excellent, including delivery ( I got it in my mailbox and not just outside the door ) . The price is also very good , I will buy again from the seller if they have movies I want, including the other 2 DVDs from this trilogy. The package was very good and there was a slip in case if I wanted to return DVD with boxes to check - for what reason the DVD is returned. The seller deserves 5 stars, it is just DVD missing English audio , got 4 stars from me.
