About the Author Rabbi Matias Libedinsky was born in Santiago, Chile, in 1976. From early childhood he showed a special interest in a variety of scientific fields. During high school, he won several awards in mathematics and physics competitions at both national and international levels. In his university entrance examination, he obtained the highest marks of his generation. In 1998, Rabbi Libedinsky earned the Licenciado en Fisica (Bachelor of Science in Physics) at the University of Chile. Afterwards, he traveled to the United States, where in the year 2000 he earned an M.S. in Physics at the California Institute of Technology, Caltech. During his university years, Libedinsky discarded an agnosticism bordering on atheism for a more spiritual vision of the world. Later, he began his formal Jewish education at the Darche Noam Yeshiva (center for higher Jewish education) in Jerusalem, where he studied from 2000 to 2002. In 2001 he married Jana, with whom he currently has five daughters. From 2002 through 2006, Rabbi Libedinsky continued his rabbinic studies in the kollel (post-yeshiva institute) of the Beis Israel Yeshiva directed by Rabbi Nosson Weisz, afterwards returning to Chile to form, together with a group of rabbis, the Morasha Institute, which is today the most successful entity devoted to the teaching of Judaism to university-age youths in Chile. is it necessary to invoke a God to understand the origin of the universe?
This book is a must-read for anyone interested in the following question: is it necessary to invoke a God to understand the origin of the universe?Hawking attempts to understand the origin of the universe without making reference to a God. And at this he was successful and influential. In this book, the author makes the bold attempt to argue back at Hawking, concluding the exact opposite: that god indeed is necessary for a honest and true understanding of the origin of the universe. To accomplish this daunting task the author makes full use of his years of training in physics and jewish studies to develop novel and intriguing arguments. Starting by explaining in a clear non-technical language what lies at the core of Hawking's ideas, he then highlights the limitations of his arguments, and then proceeds to propose his own alternative. This book speaks to the scientist, the religious person, and the persons that are not sure what to think, but are intrigued about the question. It is written in accessible language and presents the ideas clearly and in depth. While I don't personally agree with all the points made in the book, they do force atheists (like myself) to pause for a second, consider the alternatives, and realize that deep-held beliefs are not as straightforward as we might want to believe they are.The ball is now in Hawking's court. It will be very exciting to see how he responds back.

Loved it!
This is a must read for anyone engaged or interested in the modern Science V/s God debate. The Rabbi has a solid background in modern physics and challenges Hawking's ideas in a very simple, entertaining and effective way. Either if you are a religious person interested in apologetics or in having a solid rationale for your belief, or you are totally agnostic and enjoy to philosophize about the origins of the cosmos, this book will prove to be a very enlightening read. Would love to see Rabbi Libedinsky and Mr. Hawking in a live debate!!

An answer to "the God question" for the intellectually honest
Libedensky's book works for layperson and the expert alike. It is written clearly and interestingly, and does the job of explaining cosmology and "the God question" in an intelligent way, never talking down to the reader and never speaking like an evangelist.Anyone who considers him- or herself intellectually honest should read this book in order to understand the other side of the Big Bang.
