This extraordinary text clutches the basic language learners' hands and would not let go of her until it has submerged her well into this new world: a new world where speaking the new language, English, becomes an instant reality almost automatically.When I first started using Foundations, doubts loomed on my horizon, was this the right text to implement as a basic ESL program for adults? I wondered. Two weeks into the program, my doubts disappeared. This relatively small book goes a long way. It is richly endowed with lots of "language" for the Low-beginner to start immediately contextualizing the new language. It would have never occured to me that these snippets of conversations would entail such command of the language in such a short period of time. I must caution you though: as an instructor I always supplement my teaching materials, and at time, Foundations might feel somewhat overwhelming specially to the slackers; however, it should also be noted that it would seem that the authors have the concept of expositions to the language as the pivotal ingredient of this book, and thus, the serious student will be drawn into speaking, reading, writing, and understanding English in no time. She is in for an adventurous ride - chunking her way into the language.The thematic sequence laid out by Foundations lends itself beautifully to a didactical feeling that the skilled instructor could allow herself be guided by. The essential life skills vocabulary, the simple dialogues, the coloful photos and illustrations, and the all-skill activities, make the implicit, subtle grammatical terms be digested easily by the ESL leaners.As somebody working with adults with low literacy skills, and very limited, if any prior English knowledge, I have found Foundations to be extremely helpful -- motivating the student, exposing the student to the language, and giving the student ample opportunities to use the language. To me, Foundations masterfully exploits the three key components to language acquisition: Motivation, Exposition, and Utilization.

We've used these for years teaching absolute beginners to speak English. Pictures and color keep it interesting.
