8 Little Preludes and Fugues: Schirmer Library of Classics Volume 1456 Organ Solo

Excellent for beginners but now known not to be by Bach.
These are wonderful pieces for the beginning (or returning) organist, but they are not by Bach. From Wikipedia:While originally attributed to Bach, scientific examination of the extant manuscripts by Alfred Dürr in 1987 and subsequent stylistic analysis of the score by Peter Williams have suggested that the eight preludes and fugues might have been composed by one of his pupils, Johann Ludwig Krebs. As Williams explains, whoever the composer was, the works show an ability to compose in diverse ways—the toccata, the Italian concerto, the galant style, the fughetta and the durezze style with slow suspensions, favored by Girolamo Frescobaldi. It has not yet been possible to date the compositions, but Williams writes: "Though frequently charming and melodious, they could hardly have been written by J. S. Bach for his pupils since their 'standard of counterpoint and general musicianship' does not fit the period in question, nor does the scarcity of copies suggest they were much used, [...] even as part of a bigger compendium. Nevertheless, the pieces do amount to a fine book for learners, teaching whether or how to add pedal, use a second manual, and register according to so-called key characteristics."[2]

Great Reprint of the 8 Short Organ Preludes & Fugues of Bach
These are the well-known 8 "Little" preludes and fugues that are attributed to J.S. Bach (1685-1750). First, these compositions allegedly by the famous organist and composer J.S.Bach are usually never included in a collection of his compositions because their attribution is uncertain. Many musicologists believe they were not written by J.S. but rather by one of his pupils. In any case, personally I don't care because as a young organist just starting to learn the organ I was presented with these pieces by my teacher and they will forever be emblazoned in my mind as being "Bach" compositions.Second, their effect on hearing them is big but their length in time is short as compared to most other Bach organ compositions, therefore, to those familiar with them nothing needs to be said, but for those unfamiliar with them I would say that these are not "little" but more appropriately "short": They should be re-titled as 8 Short Preludes & Fugues by J.S. Bach.Third, although these 8 short preludes & fugues don't require the kind of technique required of Bach's major organ compositions, they are none-the-less NOT simple to play properly. They have special difficulties of their own and most importantly exemplify certain aspects of playing the organ in general that are unique to the organ to execute properly and so require practice. Any organist can play these organ compositions, but playing them properly is another matter in spite of their being short or "little".The reprint of the original G. Schirmer pressing is very good. Other editions of Bach's organ compositions are slightly different, but this is a great reprint and it replaced my very, very, very, very old copy!Well worth the price!!!

I’m a little confused...
So I ordered a copy and I thought this was going to be good. It wasn’t too expensive and it arrived surprisingly quickly (ahead of schedule.) I got the package and thought it was large print prior to opening it.I had never been more wrong in my life.- I now have exactly eleven (11) copies -I’m not sure if this is intentional or an error but I was not aware of this happening.

An old friend
I played the 8 Preludes and Fugues well over 55 years ago when I was a teen organist. Did not keep it up -- but still play the piano. A real pleasure and challenge to play these works on a piano trying to combine the pedal where I can. It was a great price for an old favorite of mine. The book was used with the previous owner's name in it dated in 1971. I was a captain in the USAF then and had just returned from overseas in the far east. Wondered if the person had continued to play; I hope so. At least, her annotations were quite useful.

Met expectations
Just replacing a worn out copy from my student days of the 1960's. It was great to have a fresh clean copy again!

You can't go wrong with this publisher
This is a long time favorite publisher of classical piano music. I trust that works from this publisher will be authentic, easy to read as printed and well annotated when possible. This is my go to publisher for classical piano music during my62 years as a pianist and 25 years of teaching

Out of the Past Comes my old Music Book to Practice. The 'old familiar' is Such A Help!
Yes,, it is exactly the same book which my organ teacher gave me to work on. Years ago. Thanks so much. I am retired now and keeping music in my life is important. Just what I wanted to work on. Thought I would never see it again.

Manca la diteggiatura.
Il libro è come descritto, la raccolta è bella, purtroppo manca completamente la diteggiatura che per me è molto importante, per questo ho dato 3 stelle. Ma ora gli spartiti sono tutti così.
