This book is important for learners of the Russian language!

This is an absolutely word for word English transcription of Eugene Onegin. I find this excellent for an English speaking learner of Russian, who loves Pushkin. There is absolutely no effort to make a smooth, "poetic" version in English. In fact the English version may have been composed mostly by computer. Read the original Russian text on the right hand page - if word three on line six stumps you, look to the page on the left - a corresponding English word will be in exactly the same position. Go over a stanza a few times and I think you may get a pretty good idea how Pushkin felt it.I wish there were more bilingual editions like this!

At the moment, I'm a beginner in Russian. No one would recommend Eugene Onegin as a first text in Russian. With this book, however, along with a recording (played at half speed), I'm finding it possible to enjoy the verse. I had previously made the attempt with Nabokov's translation, which was said to be literal, but I found that it was not literal enough for my purposes. By itself, this word-for-word translation would often be confusing. For example, "and better make up not could" from the first stanza. What does that mean? It must be further interpreted, which I do by keeping translations by Falen and Clarke nearby.

Also, a good supplement for anyone reading the Nabokov translation who wants to follow along with the original text.

The English translation is clearly AI generated with zero editing. There is no author, editor, or publisher listed. The only credit is the one in the photo I included. If you already speak some Russian and just want to double check yourself and limit time looking up some words, this might be helpful. However, the English "translation" in no way gives a sense of the real poetry or meaning. It makes little grammatical sense, as we simply cannot translate Russian word for word. That's not how languages work.I'm not going to return this book, but I cannot recommend it. I find it very lazy for someone to put this product out there without doing any work whatsoever. I have purchased other dual language books that do a great job. This is not one of them.

Type is readable. Pushkin's great work is now much more enjoyable.

Perfect translation for someone learning the language, the English is a direct translation and not abridged for poetic style. Get this for learning russian, not for enjoying an English version of the poem.

I don't know if this "translation" was produced by Artificial Intelligence - if so, natural stupidity would have been better. The English version is a string of words in the same order as the Russian original and makes very little sense. It begins:"My uncle is of the most honest rules,When not in joke fell sick,He respect himself made,And better make up not could,His example is to others a science..."It carries on throughout in the same vein, producing many gems along the way like "Ah nanny, nanny to that whether?" and "Notched, reliably screwed flint is cocked still". Yes, you can use it to track down a Russian word you don't know without bothering with a dictionary, but it is extremely irritating. I doubt if you could follow the story from the English if you didn't already know it.Rating, of course, relates to this edition, not to Pushkin's text!
