Useful but not great
I purchased this as a supplement to the online materials available through Pearson to study for the Elementary Subtests I and II.This book contains 2 sample tests with answers. I also purchased and took the full length practice tests online and the online study packets. The online materials Pearson provides are in direct alignment with the test. This makes sense; it's Pearson's test. However, I wanted additional practice test materials and Pearson only makes one practice test available per test.I found the Language Arts/Social Studies sections in this book to be in close alignment with NES Subtest I. In fact, some material in this book is not found in the online study materials and WAS on my test. I appreciated the supplemental practice questions for Social Studies and Language Arts. There were some differences but overall the book was helpful and I'm glad I purchased the test book to help study for Subtest I.Subtest II was totally unlike the practice questions in this book. The math questions in the book include higher level algebra. Science questions in this book include one killer about RNA sequencing and many other really tough questions. There was nothing like that on my actual test. And studying these harder questions is a waste of time because it does not prepare you for what is actually on the test. There are some useful questions here; it's probably wise to study the online materials and then, when using this book, skip anything that looks like it would be out of alignment with the online materials. The online study guide and practice test were much better study materials for Subtest II.This is an expensive item for what you get. This is a very small paperback booklet. It comes with answers but many of them (especially the math) are incomplete or incomprehensible. This item is only worth purchasing if you want supplemental material for Subtest I. There really are limited resources available to prep for these exams and I am happy to have had the extra materials for that one test. Even knowing it was mostly useless for Subtest II, I'm still glad I bought it.

The quetions are ridiculous and not aligned to WA state standards.
Luckily I got it used, but at that $20 was still too much. The majority of the questions are ridiculously off base and IN NO WAY ALIGNED to WA state elementary education standards. The reading portion is not too bad, but the rest of the sections are more aligned to high school or nothing at all! I suppose it gives you the opportunity to practice test taking skills by making educated guesses by focusing on what the ridiculous questions are asking and process of elimination. They might be useful if you are practicing to be a contestant on Jeopardy. Here is a sample math question:"A complex right triangle has orthogonal sides of length (6+i3) and (4+i 'root sign'3). The hypotenuse has the length of:"....Here is a sample social science question: "What is the Noble Eightfold Path in Buddhism?" There are about 10 Social Science questions per the two exams and about 50% are as ridiculous as this. Here is a sample science question: "Which of the following ethical questions regarding biotechnology would be answered and regulated by the FDA?" There are also only about 10 Science questions per the two exams and about 50% are as ridiculous as this. Here is a sample of a question from the arts, health, and fitness section: "What was the goal of The Five - Mily Balakirev, Cesar Cui, Modest Mussorgsky, Nikolai Pimsky-Korsakov, and Alexander Borodin - the group of composers who met periodically in St. Petersburg, Russia, between 1856 and 1870?" Really? Didn't remember having to learn this in K-8!I am obtaining certification via an accelerated program and have not taken standard education courses, but my common sense and experience working in a K-8 setting is enough to know these are no way aligned to elementary standards or curriculum in WA state.

This guide wasn't helpful for SUBTEST ll
If you are wanting to purchase this to assist you with the NES SUBTEST ll PLEASE DON'T waste your money. The math and science practice questions in this book are completely different from the ones in the exam. After taking the exam twice I have realized that there really isn't a guide out there with math and science questions that are similar to the test.HERE IS WHAT I RECOMMEND FOR YOU TO STUDY:Graphs- There will be MANY graphs on the exam. You'll have to search for patterns within the graphs. Make sure that you understand how to read all type of graphs.Logical reasoning questions- The exam had about four logical reasoning questions. I didn't know that they would be on the exam. So, I didn't get a chance to practice these at all. Here is an example of a logical reasoning question. There are twice as many adult tickets sold as children's tickets. If adult tickets cost $8 and children's tickets cost $5 and if $4200 was collected, how many of each type were sold?Military time word problems- The exam had about three questions involving military time. Just like the logical reasoning questions I didn't know these type of questions would be on the exam. So, again I struggled when solving these questions. The exam will also ask you to convert seconds into hours, seconds into minutes, minutes into days, and so on. If you study all of the type of problems that I just mentioned you will pass! Good luck!

The book met my needs. I am getting ready to take my certification and I find this book to be exceptional. I like the way the questions are in the front and at the back are the answers. Some books put everything together which makes it hard for a student to concentrate without seeing the answer.

This actually was the best price.
I got the book rapidly and that is what I needed. It was a little pricey for as thin as it is but it has 2 practice tests in it and it is very helpful. This actually was the best price.

Excellent examples of different styles of questions on NES exam
This book does a good job of preparing you for the style of questions on the NES exam. It does a good job of explaining why specific answers are correct/incorrect. I will recommend this to fellow teachers preparing for the exam

Don't know.
This was given to someone as a gift, so I can not really rate it. I gave it three stars just as an average rating.
