In the specs, the light source is listed as "LED." But no, it's really a green laser, and very bright. The USB connection has no cord; I plug mine into a USB "extension cord". It appears to be quite sturdy. I just received mine, so no news about durability or lifetime. The company warns about keeping the battery charged, but that's a feature of all lithium batteries. I bought this to replace an old pointer that used disposable batteries; this one is much nicer. The beam is definitely visible in the night sky (which is what I bought it for), more so than others I've owned/used. Re. the "crystal" multi-patterns: who cares?! :-)
