Dance Fever (Deluxe)

Better than “High as Hope”.
“Dance Fever” is a misleading title, aside from “My Love” there is not much here to swing your handbag around the dance floor to (that of course has never been Florence’s main brand).Basically, it appears Florence was annoyed isabella summers and Paul Epworth were taking too high a percentage cut in royalties (which steadily increased over the course of her first three albums) and unadvisedly got shot of them.“High As Hope” (album four) was weak as a result - this one is better but still lacks the consistent punch in quality that both “Ceremonials” and “How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful” had.Unlike “High As Hope”, this time the visuals are on brand and on point.Jack Antonoff is not as good a producer (despite being more celebrated and high profile) than Paul Epworth and I think Florence should have realised that when early mixes of “Dance Fever” began to come off the production console.Instead of beating down a path to the door of Antonoff like most other big pop girls (Lana, Lorde, Taylor, St. Vincent), In my view Florence should have been more self aware and reticent of making such a now cliched career move.Jack Antonoff may have recently won a Grammy but that does not mean he is not overworked, tired sounding and lacking in inspiration.Despite these flaws “Dance Fever” is a solid and consistent effort (if not a terribly exciting one).

Another great album
Florence + The Machine are back again with Dance Fever, some great songs and most are quite slow but still a great album. Will have to listen a few more times for it to grow on me, but definitely a lay on the bed and chill type of album. Search and Destroy is a great song! Love the Book the cd comes in it’s like a real storybook and nice to add to the collection.

Great Start, but Flattens out a Bit
This latest 2022 album from Florence & the Machine was, like its predecessors, a huge commercial success and it went all the way to the top of the charts. It starts very strongly with the singles "King" and "Free" - on both tracks you may feel a certain kinship with Arcade Fire. "King" is dramatic and dark, but also catchy, a great middle piece. "Free" is more upbeat and also catchy."Choreomania" is different, with a quiet start and a nice build-up. Another highlight. From here, I feel that the album flattens out a bit. The third single "Heaven is Here" is short and generally not very commercial and catchy. Commercial, on the other hand, is the dance track "My love" - probably nice to dance to, but as a listening number it quickly becomes a bit unexciting. There are several somewhat anonymous songs, and it is only with the final song "Morning Elvis" I feel new exciment. The song is a kind of tribute to the old singer - nice build up and a gospel outro.

A stunning album
I have loved Florence for a while now; her voice is fantastic and her lyrics can be more like poetry than mere words to a song. When I saw that Dance Fever was going to be her latest release, I was excited to see what it would have to offer. So excited, in fact, that I splashed out on the deluxe version with hardback book, and the CD with signed art card. Out of both of these purchases, I am definitely glad that I bought the deluxe edition. The hardback lyric book is beautiful, and I love to have the lyrics to the songs that I am listening to. Dance Fever is described by Florence as a fairy tale in 14 songs, and weirdly, this lyric book kind of makes me believe that. Each track has its own accompanying photo, before the lyrics are set out. There is also a ribbon marker, and the CD itself is kept in a little pouch on the back inside cover. The music itself is fantastic. King and My Love are both incredibly strong (the acoustic of My Love is sublime), but songs like Free, The Bomb and Dream Girl Evil are also incredibly strong too.Fantastic album overall; already my favourite of this year so far.
