Grammar Girl's 101 Words to Sound Smart (Quick & Dirty Tips)

OK, weak joke. But, seriously, not sure how to convey with enough impact, how wonderful this young lady's contribution to the study of my native (?) language is....she is funny, informative, and interesting. I really don't know what else to add. If one of my children had written books as good as these, I would change m will so that child inherited all $27.

I taught middle and high school grammar. A lot of this is "old hat." However Mignon's clear, easy to grasp presentation in all her works is what, I suppose, put her at the top of her discipline. I've got everything available of hers. She's corrected me on a few points and I enjoy every minute with her material. I'm pleased to have her in my library.

Mignon Fogarty is always a fun read (and a wealth of knowledge re: grammar - check out Grammar Girl online!), and I enjoyed this book as well.NOTE: This product was a personal purchase for myself at the normal retail price. very handy and good to carry even of a medium coats pocket. very quick to find the word, two words with examples per page, arranged in a fun matter with sporadic pictures in some.

Enhancing one's vocabulary is always important, so having this nifty little book on your person at all times is a great way to accomplish that. In true Grammar Girl style, the book is quick to the point, with cute little drawings to accompany most of the new words its trying to teach you.

Many youngsters "get stuck" phrasing same vocabularies just to look and sound "kool." This little book is packed with definitions to broaden their thinking and to expand their usage of vocabularies.

Grammar Girl's 101 Words to Sound Smart is filled with interesting words. Each one is clearly defined but not with the clinical precision of a dictionary. Instead, Mignon Fogarty provides interesting background on the origins of most of the words and gives concrete examples of how the usage may have changed over time. Each word is also accompanied by a quotation or two showing it being used correctly. These quotations were very fun to read and their sources ranged from journalists to politicians to popular authors and television shows.Some of the words contained in this book were familiar to me but Fogarty pointed out subtle nuances of usage that I was unfamiliar with. Other words were completely new. While I do not see myself regularly interjecting these words into my reviews or other writings, I will be keeping this book on hand as a reference guide for those occasions when an extra special word is needed.The one thing that I found to be missing from this book is a pronunciation guide for each word. While Fogarty is discussing the usage of these words in writing, I still like to know how the word should sound in my head as I am reading it.

This book is terrible, most of the words are not common enough to use and likely will never use. I don't recommend.

Began reading these with my mother when I was younger - now reading it with my little one - go through one word a day and see if we can incorporate them somehow the next day is sort of fun

「かっこよく響く101語」というのは学習辞典でＤランクかそれ以下の語、すなわち難語（hard word）と見なされる語101語である。ざっと見たところ評者がピンと来たのは下記の16語だけで情けない思いをした。avant-garde, gestalt, sardonicは「アバンガルド」などカタカナ語で日本語に入っているもの、あとはほとんど言語学関係の書を読んでいる際に辞書を引いて覚えた語である。avant-garde, bona-fides, cacophony, dogmatic, eponymous, existential, gestalt, imperious, juxtaposition, languid, neologism, nuance, pedantic, prosaic, Rubicon, sardonic,英語辞書は難語辞書から出発して、日常語も収録した現在の一般辞書に発展してきた。しかし英米の教養人のなかには難しい語を使って教養のあるところを見せてやりたいという気持ちが強いので、この種の難語集が流行るのであろう。これを読んで語彙力を試してみてはいかがでしょう。著者はGrammar Girl’s Quick and Dirty Tips to Better Writingなどで、著名なM. Fogarty である。

多分日本人にはほとんど知られていないGrammar Girlのシリーズですが、定期的に配信されるポッドキャストなども楽しく拝聴しています。この単語集は、Weblio英単語の語彙力診断テストのレベルでいうと25以上のものが結構あるため（つまり賢者レベル）、英検1級の勉強には不要なものばかりと思います。ただ、各単語について、丁寧にギリシア語やラテン語からどのように由来しているのか、を説明しているので、ほぉ～という感じで読み物として面白く、また、当該単語がWSJなどでどう使用されているかも書かれているので、非常に参考になります。コンパクトながら、中身は重厚かもしれません。
