Ledger HW.1

This is my first hardware wallet and I think it's pretty awesome. The wallet is pretty straightforward to setup. It comes with a security card to write to write down your key. It uses a chrome app to send and receive BTC. It does not work for any other cryptocurrency.One big flaw is that it's flimsy. The wallet has a plastic hinge that makes it thick enough to plug into a standard USB port. I snapped the tab getting it out of the credit card sized mold. That removes a star.Other than that it's great.

An awful hardware wallet. As the owner of a TREZOR (a good hardware wallet that actually works), the HW.1 falls woefully short. I knew of its shortcomings before ordering - the lack of a screen, having to use a "security card," coming pre-burned with a single private key, flimsy snap-together hardware. But I thought to myself, "Hey, it's cheap, I'll just play around with it and give it away to some crypto noob who needs to up their cold storage."How wrong I was. I tried the HW.1 on THREE operating systems - OS X, Windows, and of course, Linux. I tried it with multiple wallets - first Electrum, then the official Ledger Chrome app (yuck), and finally, GreenWallet. None of these three would recognize the device, despite the computer detecting it when running lsusb. Drivers were properly installed, udev rules modified. No wallet would initialize the setup phase.I'm left to assume that all the "smart" card based wallets that Ledger produces are garbage, which is why they've stopped making them. I'd love to give Ledger another shot with their new Ledger Nano S, as it's getting rave reviews, but I can't bring myself to give them another red cent after the HW.1.Do yourself a favor and just pony up the extra dough for a decent hardware wallet.

The product works and functions the way it was advertised. But I haven't used it extensively.

WARNING! Visible evidence that this was tampered with prior to delivery. Partially pre-punched out and scratch marks across the gold contact area that seem to result from it already being inserted into some sort of device while still in the plastic card.  Ledger HW.1

Wenn nur das Installations/Setupgefuddel so furchtar wäre, bei mir hat das erst einmal gar nicht getan, siehe meine Produktfrage. Aber da ich ja (zumindest bei Linux) nicht gerade ein Einsteiger bin, habe ich das Teil doch noch zum Laufen bekommen.Bei meinem Chromebook war das nicht ganz so einfach (da hat man ja keinen Zugriff als root und kann sich die Systemmeldungen ansehen), aber auch da hat es der Installation einiger zusätzlicher Addons funktioniert.Bei der 'Start-Howto' Seite des Herstellers wird das mit keinem Wort erwähnt, das ist sehr kundenunfreunlich. Wie das bei Windoof und dem angebissenen Apfel-OS ist, kann ich nicht sagen, ich habe was gegen proprietäre Software ;-)
