The Irish Slaves: Slavery, indenture and Contract labor Among Irish Immigrants (Volume 1) [Akamatsu, Rhetta] on desertcart.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. The Irish Slaves: Slavery, indenture and Contract labor Among Irish Immigrants (Volume 1) Review: Riveting account of Irish slavery in America - I couldn't put this book down, very well written with spaces between stories so it is easy to read. Honest and straightforward, piercing and moving, with plenty of historical references backing up the information. Somehow, reading details of our history and peoples' past experiences helps to make sense of today's situation. People should learn that White people were also enslaved, just like Black people. We are all in this together, as the author writes, this a human problem. Maybe if people learned that ALL people have been enslaved in the past, could we come together and heal????? Review: Interesting - Interesting topic. Sources provided. The message that slavery is not nearly so much about race but about historical losers is very clear. The book itself was worth reading. However, felt it should have been proof read better for spelling and punctuation by the author or publisher.

Interesting and Informative
I was concern that this book was written without valid references and I took the time to google the information where the author refer to. And so far I was not disappointed. Throughout the book there were some misspelled words, which caused me to go back and reread. After reading the book for a while I started wondering if the author did this on purpose. To keep the reader focused. Over all I thought the book was interesting and wish humanity of that time was more compassionate.

VITAL HISTORICAL INFORMATION SUPPRESSED. MUST READ AND CIRCULATE.
This is vital information that very few people know. It is essential to comprehend the truth of slavery and the misunderstood term "indentured servant," not only in the US but around the world. People are completely unaware of the Irish Slave Practice and just how huge it was. Instead, the public is systemically lied to about our true history. People fight not for what is right but for the myths they were told. Think of the healing that would take place if people today comprehended where their inherited grief and trauma originated. This is a MUST read. It is ESSENTIAL. We are wrong about our history. Again, our world is built on historical lies. Let the healing begin. It is long overdue.

Very informative..
I enjoyed the book. It really opened my eyes. I had heard of the indentured servitude of Irish in America, but was unaware it started much earlier all over the world. Remind me again why we allow England to maintain these commonwealth's and are so enamored with the Royal Family?

An Irish ancestor
This was a great book. Especially, for those that want to know the true history of how the Irish were treated. It is also a great history book for those that want to learn more about other people that were treated wrongly and enslaved not just other races. I truly like the other comment at the very end of the book about," not being erased thing". In today's world it's always a race thing there's so many cultures that have been enslaved not just one. I absolutely love this book and I felt myself reading it constantly. I will probably go back and reread it. Thanks for your work and dedication on this project. D-Wat

User Friendly Easy to Read
Large print and illustrations plus short paragraphs make for easy use and continuatlion to end of book. A good broad view with significant data in brief details. Does not get bogged down. Sure to enlighten the general reader on various aspects of the subject. Recommend this for discussion on race relations to arrive at the real problem of human relations. Should encourage further research into Irish oppression and slavery in various parts of the world from centuries ago and up to today, particularly in Northern Ireland. Racism, discrimination, bigotry, oppression, and other hostile motives are not one sided. Various cultures have suffered from internal and/or external influences.

What maltreatment these Irish citizens had from the English once they took over Ireland. For 100s of years they persecuted, killed,, enslaved, shipped and sold them. It was not until the 1920s that most of Ireland was freed from English rule. No one one is taught in school that Virginia was an English penal colony for convicts from Ireland, but everyone is taught that New South Wales was. This is a very good read for anyone who is interested in geniolgy, ancestry, American history not taught in America, slavery, why the Irish Republican Army exists, why the Irish would not fight on any side the English where on in World War2, excetera.
