Time's running out for the world's supreme criminal mastermind: Fu Manchu has run out of the elixir that keeps his 168-year-old body Fit for Fiendishness. So he and his malevolent minions set out to purloin the ingredients, including a canary-yellow diamond that's one of England's crown jewels. In his final film, Peter Sellers merrily spoofs one of horror's favorite arch villains. He's deliciously diabolical -- and doesn't stop there: he's up to his old multiple-role tricks that worked so hilariously in Dr. Strangelove and The Mouse That Roared, also stiff-upper-lipping it as Fu's unflappable nemesis, Nayland Smith of Scotland Yard. Adding to this case of multiple laughs are Helen Mirren as a tap-dancing constable, Sid Caesar as an uncouth American G-man and David Tomlinson as a befuddled commissioner.

Peter Sellers at His Best
How can you beat the combination of Peter Sellers, Dame Helen Mirren, and Peter Sellers? In this movie Sellers plays dual rolls as both the protagonist and antagonist, ripping on the old Charlie Chan movies of the 40's. Fu Manchu (Sellers) is aging and needs to find the ingredients for a potion guaranteeing immortality. It's up to former Scotland Yard detective Nayland Smith (also Sellers) and Officer Rage (Mirren) to thwart his evil plans of world domination.Don't confuse this movie with Sellers in the Pink Panther franchise, however, this movie's humor is quite different but never the less enjoyable for the entire family. Do keep an eye out for a cameo appearance of Burt Kwouk who played Cato in the Pink Panther Movies. The movie is rated PG for language (Sid Caesar is a bit vulgar as the ugly American).

PETER SELLERS' LAST FILM, AND A BRILLIANTLY HILARIOUS GRAND FINALE ...
... A lethally subtle and over-the-top satire/parody of Sax Rohmer's "Fu Manchu" series of novels-- sedately hysterical Victorian potboiler cliff-hanger mystery/adventure thrillers that relentlessly packed plot lines to bursting with maximum whackazoid esoteric and exotic weirdness second to none. There could have been no more perfect playground for Sellers' multifacetted genius and signature multiple characters, and he romper-stompers through them with his most effortlessly perceptive and dazzling send-ups. And the supporting cast is just as dazzlingly hilarious; classic, legendary timing, interplay and nuance; you can absolutely sense that everyone on camera is continuously hemorrhaging internally, trying their damndest not to just crack up and totally lose it ... and Sellers is joyously relentless, even trying for the on-set crew every chance he gets. Way to go, Peter.

I have always like Peter Sellers and I had missed this film when it came out, and it has rarely been on cable. I thought it worthwhile to take a chance and I can see why it was seldom shown. Sellers plays Fu and a British adversary. The scenes involving Fu aren't that funny and I don't think the British adversary was written to be a comic character. Sid Cesar and Helen Mirren were wasted. I didn't dislike the film, but I felt it was a half hearted attempt at comedy.

I Love This Movie
The Fiendish Plot of Dr. Fu Manchu has long been a favorite of mine. I have never understood critics' harsh reviews of Fu Manchu, especially when I've seen some of the crap they liked :/ An hilarious picture, which never fails to make me laugh. Peter Sellers' declining health at the time of doing it actually made his characters more interesting. Sellers was able to take heavy subjects like aging and dying and poke some humor at them. Yes, I am a Peter Sellers fan, but this movie is probably my favorite Sellers flick. Fu Manchu is quirky, with cult-film appeal, in many ways ahead of it's time; I love this film, with no apologies.

Hidden Gem
This is must have for anyone who ever thought that there was more going on in a Chinese restaurant than met the eye. It seems to me that this is Sellers' vanity movie, i.e. the movie he always wanted to make but had to wait until he could finance it himself. Peter Sellers was a master at layering one absurdity on top of another until the whole pile collapsed in hillarity. Who knew domestic current could be so stimulating? Mr. Foo, the most famous caterer in London.

Entretenida
Entretenido.

Fiendish plot Fu Man Chu
The star rating applies to the efficiency of delivery service. The film, Peter Sellers last, is primarily of interest for that very reason. His last truely GREAT film was just before this, Being There. Peter made a good effort here, but who knows (health-wise) howwell he felt up to it. He did reprise the idea of playing multiple parts, as well as the title character. The film itself, sadly, is not onlyhis last film, but far from the best of his film credits.

It is very much a 'love it or hate it' film
This film reflects the genius of Peter Sellers not long before his premature death. It is very much a 'love it or hate it' film, the humour having clear ancestry in the Goons, Monty Python and other British humour traditions. The plot is straight forward and moves along nicely while it creates opportunities for Sellers to perform in set pieces. He plays two parts - Dr Fu Manchu and his arch-enemy Nayland Smith. Smith is brought out of retirement by Scotland Yard (London Police) to counter Fu Manchu's attempt to re-create his elixir of eternal life by stealing valuable artifacts. Sellers' portrayal of Naylan Smith is, in my view, perfect and it would be worth watching this film just to see such wonderful character acting. The film on the video is not the full version that was released in the UK and at least two scenes have been cut. I can only assume that this was with USA audiences in mind. The worst cut is:- Constable Rage (Helen Mirren) is not hired because of her 'healthy legs' as suggested in this version: in the original version Sellers has her walking and waving 'after the manner of the (British) Royals' in order to get the job she seeks.
