Sexy 70s Film. Terrific picture quality
Mimsy Farmer is my new Farrah Fawcett. Trippy, cool, sexy story with noir-ish elements. This disc is a keeper.

tres bon film !

Classic curiousity; Kino Lorber bluray
Kino Lorber should be applauded for the company's admirable restoration and rescue of lesser known, but significant, film titles. They have also shown a strong commitment to the work of underrated directors. Georges Lautner is a case in point. I was fascinated with his filmmaking style in "Icy Breasts," although the film was lackluster overall. But after viewing, "The Road to Salina" (a.k.a. "La route de Salina"), I can see how he deserves re-evaluation.Released in 1970, "Salina" is told mostly in flashback and involves a hippie drifter named Jonas (a rather smoldering Robert Walker, Jr., son of Robert Walker and Jennifer Jones), who wanders into a roadside station where Mara (the great Rita Hayworth) immediately mistakes him for her son, Rocky, who vanished four years earlier. Confused and hungry, he goes along with the seemingly-addled but kind woman, who feeds and shelters him. A neighbor and suitor of Mara (Ed Begley, Sr., in his final film role) visits, and he also acts as if Jonas is Rocky.Enter Rocky's sister Billie (Mimsy Farmer), who continues the charade. A mind-F of an incestuous flirtation begins, brews, and explodes. What follows is a bizarre, mysterious, and captivating narrative that messes with the minds of its audience in a mostly bracing, stimulating manner.Lautner co-wrote the screenplay with Pascal Jardin and Jack Miller, from a fairly unknown novel by Maurice Cury ("Sur la Route de Salina"). The film was Lautner's only English-language foray, but the dialogue is pretty strong. If Lautner's work has any major issues, it's in the way he films his murder sequences. They tend to come off as laughable, which I am guessing wasn't the intent. The film initially has the feel of a Tennessee Williams play, but quickly settles into a milieu all its own. Speaking of setting, we are never told exactly where this gas station is. Our main characters speak English. We see our protagonist reading a San Diego newspaper and the people in the small town of Salina speak Spanish, so we can assume it's Mexico. Oh, and the ocean is nearby. The film was shot on the Canary Islands. We discover little about Jonas' past or why he would want to remain in such a desolate and dull place for so long — except for his infatuation with Billie. And here's where a similar issue I had with "Icy Breasts" arises. While Farmer is a far more interesting thespian than Mireille Darc, I didn't buy her as the kind of femme fatale a young man would desperately fall for.Walker, on the other hand, shows all signs of being a commanding leading man, and while he did work steadily for a few years, I'm not sure why he didn't become more of a familiar face.As for screen goddess Rita Hayworth, it's a bit jarring seeing her portray a woman who is seemingly delusional since, a few years later, she would be diagnosed with Alzheimer's. Regardless, her performance is intense and truly beguiling. And there is a last bit that makes us question everything about... well, everything. The Blu-ray 4K restoration from the original camera negative (shot in Panavision by Maurice Fellous) is stunning, and the audio track sounds great. (Tarantino used some of the music in "Kill Bill: Vol 2").Film Historians Howard S. Berger, Steve Mitchell, and Nathaniel Thompson add an enthusiastic audio commentary that discusses how the film doesn't easily fit into any genre or style. The trio are obvious fans.I highly recommend "The Road to Salina" to get a gander at the original, hypnotic kind of cinema that was being created in the 1970s.Blu-ray Extras Include:4K Restoration from the Original Camera NegativeNew audio commentary by Film Historians Howard S.
