This work is a clearly stated theory on how humans think, decide, and defend their decisions. In general, social psychologists, always looking for the next great theory, seemed to have shelved this book and its concepts within a couple of decades after it came out in 1957 (see Leon Festinger's comments 30 years later in Appendix B of "Cognitive Dissonance Progress on a Pivotal Theory in Social Psychology" edited by Eddie Harmon-Jones and Judson Mills). Fortunately some social psychologists moved forward with the ideas proposed by Dr. Festinger, but ever so slowly. If you read this book now while considering the United States election of 2016 and what led up to it, mix in some misattribution by those in the "Rust Belt", then Leon Festinger's work provides a extraordinary set of tools to understand the complexity and outcome of that event. This book and what is contained inside should be taken seriously and improved upon, it deserves much better than what it originally received. In evaluating social interactions, I prefer a combination of dissonance theory by Leon Festinger and social identity theory as developed by Henri Tajfel and carried forward by John Turner and Michael Hogg.
