Are each shelve contain cardboard?

I think the material is stronger than cardboard. But, yes, there is something sewn into the bottom of each self to make it more sturdy.

what is the material?

It's made of the cheap material that they make those non-washable fabric grocery bags from. It's definately not cotton canvas, and probably not cotton at all. Pretty thin but it'll do for me b/c I'm not putting heavy things in it.
