I was thick-skulled and it took me about a week until I got him into the vet to determine he had a UTI, causing the irregular behavior. In the meantime, the odor was AWFUL and the room was outright unlivable. The odor filled almost the entire main floor of our house. I went on a buying spree for any and every pet urine and odor remover I could find. Using my carpet steam cleaner only seemed to spread the urine and temporarily dilute the odor, but when the area dried it would come back. I tried a combination of product that ranged from making the situation worse (here's to you, Nature's Miracle) to helping quite a bit, but not completely eliminating (bissell Steam Cleaner Pet Stain/Urine and odor remover). I hesitated with the product because it wasn't available as a Prime delivered product (thinking my ability to return would be compromised) and it is the most expensive of the options I've tried, by far. Desperate, I bit the bullet, pre-sprayed all areas that were illuminated under the UV light I purchased, sprinkled the powder and let it sit for multiple days before vacuuming up. The odor vanished. Seriously. I have not followed through with the post spray that's supposed to deter further marking yet, but instead we've blocked the cat from the room for now. He seems to have returned to normal litter box activity, thankfully, and the living room no longer smells! It's expensive, but nothing else worked and this was my last step before hiring a professional carpet cleaning company.
