The book is about the DuMontaigne family of New Orleans. Paul and Sallie the parents who had five children. Paul also had a daughter by his Quadroon Mistresshe had hAd many affairs during his marriage .He even took up with an old girlfriend right after the wedding . The affair continued till her death. His wife feeling lonely had an affair for twent years.The children actions also play a big part in the book. Paul even has an affair with a woman in his own house. She tries to kill Salle so she can marry Paul.the ending is a surprise to what happens to her and some of the children. I really liked the book this seems to be the only one she wrote in this period.i would have like to have read more by her. One of the better older books I gave read.
