Ghost [Blu-ray] [1990]

When it was my turn to suggest possible movies for watching with my wife, I opted for several Halloween romantic movies, because it was Halloween Friday indeed. She picked up this one because she saw it before, liked it and she thought I would like it as well. And what a great choice! It came out in 1990 and received two Oscars, deservedly so. Despite overwhelming majority of people who would say that it was just a movie, I always look for spiritual and metaphysical aspects connected to our little physical reality here and the infinite metaphysical reality beyond our current existence. One day all of us, unfortunately (or fortunately) would individually die and many of us are looking for answers about what that would be like. I understand that you may think that nothing would happen to you after your death and that is your choice I respect. This romantic and touching movie is quite brave for its time portraying possibilities quite familiar for those who travelled with their minds beyond physical bodies. The movie’s storyline beyond physical reality deals with the first fully form-based metaphysical dimension where everything can look the same as here on Earth. Except that there is no physical matter there, all is just shaped energy. When protagonist of the movie Sam is unexpectedly murdered and dies, he is on the other side shocked. He was not ready for that to happen. And Molly, his live-in girlfriend, is flatly refusing to recognize signals from him into physical reality until they become overwhelming. She then accepts this for many people like her and maybe you weird and impossible alternative. I am not here to tell you the details of the story, Dear Reader, you need to see the movie if you have not yet. I just want you to contemplate what you would do when something like that happened to you. This fictional story quite interestingly and believable shows dying itself and immediate reaction of separated departed soul (or spirit, mind, or whatever you choose) at the shocking fact that we continue. The shock is the biggest for those who are sure that the death is all that is. When you do not prepare yourself for that during your life here or you blindly believe what others say to you, your uncertainty and feelings of being lost can start to pile up. Not for Sam though in the movie. His determination to reach and help Molly and his love enable him to find the way through psychic phenomena, which I understand as leaks between the dimensions. The borderlines (membranes) between the dimensions in our universe are otherwise strict and well-guarded. Sam slowly but surely discovers true power of mind when unleashed after getting out of the physical body and acts. This old movie from 1990 although fictional story is truly revolutionary for its time. The story is entertaining and keeps you guessing to the end what might happen, like in a great mystery novel. I like how they portrayed possible way how one gets be taken to a hell or a heaven. It’s very well done, beautiful romantic touching story, it can easily make you cry.

Sexy Patric Swayze comes back from beyond the grave to protect his living fiancee through psychic medium Whoppi Goldberg. His fiancee Deni Moore is hard to convince, but once she believes Goldberg is not a fake, she is saved from the man that murdered Swayze. Through the laughter and the tears, at the end love conquers even death. Enchanting and uplifting..

Good movie

I rented it because of Whoopie Goldberg and was not only not disappointed, but utterly exhilarated by her character Otta May (sp.) This must be the furthest out she's gotten and still kept believability. The story is of 3 friends. Patrick is a successful financier/investor as is Tony; Demi plays Patrick's girlfriend, a professional sculptor, The two decide to buy an antique flat and renovate it; the film opens with the three of them doing some wholehearted demolition which allows Demi to have her studio downstairs and their roomy bedroom upstairs. After moving in, Tony invites them out, but they had previous plans to see "Macbeth." Walking home from the theatre, they pass a bad guy, and the story starts with a bang. The bad guy comes after them, Patrick, trying to fight him off, is killed, but doesn't realize it yet and gives chase. The confusion and lack of understanding is played very well. You can just feel how he is struggling to understand why he is still sentient, but can't touch anything.Demi stays with his body, calling for help; he is rushed to the hospital, but cannot be saved. He starts meeting other "deceased" souls, who start to enlighten him. He just has to find out what happened. He stalks the killer, and finds out it was a hired job, and that his girlfriend is in danger. This is definitely a fast paced thriller with little relief until near the end. He has to warn her, getting anxious, and finds this fake medium, or so she (Whoopie) believes, but for some reason, she can hear HIM. He plays this character very well; he is very determined, and just will NOT give up, no matter what he has to do. Their interchange is wonderful, and almost comic relief, except the danger looms. Carl, the friend (Tony), is shown to be desperately criminal, getting in with some bad guys, trying to embezzle $4,000,000, for which he needs the secret code,which is in Patrick's character's effects, taken home by Demi. The danger is always edgy, & fast paced, and Patrick's character has a lot to learn in a short time in order to effect safety,and life for his girlfriend. You begin to feel really uncomfortable with Carl (Tony), and when Patrick witnesses his confession to the murderer of how he is stealing this money, the shock and loss of trust is very visible on his face, but this spurs him into a very creative solution, which is not only very satisfying to the audience as we see Carl stunned, disbelieving, and with a terribly terribly guilty look on his face when he discovers the money he was trying to steal is gone, but delightfully hilarious, involving Whoopie's character in a high class scheme which she pulls off , well, not exactly with complete aplomb, but as much gentility as she can muster, and it is very funny. (And the scene of what she has to do subsequently raises such compassion and delight in you it is worth the whole film - what a treasure!) The pace continues, though because Carl figures out he has to kill HER, and thus, but his frantic near insane insistence ends up bringing out his own payment for his deeds. This part of the ending did not sit quite right with me; for some reason it didn't seem like true consciousness awakening justice. However, you may feel differently. I wanted him to face his intentions fully. My only other dislike was of the music; it was not original, and frequently sounded trite (borrowed themes matching the action), and thus did not support the excellence of the story, it's exploration of death, what possibilities may be open to us, such as affecting the lives of those we love, and the excellence of the actors. If you think you would like the combination of love story, thriller, wonderful comedy, and insight into eternal justice, I do recommend this film.

It is a 1990 American supernatural romance film directed by Jerry Zucker from a screenplay by Bruce Joel Rubin, starring Patrick Swayze, Demi Moore, Whoopi Goldberg, Tony Goldwyn, Vincent Schiavelli, and Rick Aviles. It focuses on Sam Wheat (Swayze), a murdered banker, whose ghost sets out to save his girlfriend, Molly Jensen (Moore), from the person who killed him – through the help of the psychic Oda Mae Brown (Goldberg). Ghost was theatrically released on July 13, 1990, to commercial success, grossing $505 million against a budget of $22–23 million and emerging as the highest-grossing film of 1990 and at the time of its release, was the third-highest-grossing film of all time. The film was a sleeper hit, unexpectedly outperforming several blockbuster action films released that summer. Its success extended to the home video market, and it was the most rented film of 1991 in the United States. The film initially received mixed reviews from critics, with praise going towards the score and performances of the cast. Ghost earned five nominations at the 63rd Academy Awards: Best Picture, Best Original Score, Best Film Editing, winning Best Supporting Actress for Goldberg and Best Original Screenplay for Rubin. Ghost was the first film Jerry Zucker directed on his own, as well as his first dramatic film. He had previously been part of the Zucker, Abrahams and Zucker directing team, known for their parody films. Zucker stated that his decision to direct Ghost was not made to distance himself from comedies or to mark a new chapter in his career, but he was merely "just looking for a good film to direct." When screenwriter Bruce Joel Rubin learned that Zucker was to direct the film and wanted to make changes to his script, he was apprehensive, as he wanted Miloš Forman or Stanley Kubrick to direct and feared Zucker would turn his script into a comedy. However, Rubin changed his mind and warmed up after dining with Zucker and being impressed by how "deeply philosophical" he was.[5] Harrison Ford, Michael J. Fox, Paul Hogan, Tom Hanks, Kevin Bacon, Kevin Kline, Alec Baldwin and Tom Cruise were considered for the role of Sam Wheat. Bruce Willis turned the role of Sam Wheat down as he did not understand the script and later called himself a "knucklehead" for declining. Similarly, Fox thought the film wouldn't work, and, in hindsight, regretted turning the role down. Michelle Pfeiffer, Molly Ringwald, Meg Ryan, Julia Roberts and Nicole Kidman were considered for the role of Molly Jensen. Tina Turner, Patti LaBelle, and Oprah Winfrey were either considered or auditioned for the role of Oda Mae Brown. Zucker initially was not interested in casting Whoopi Goldberg as Oda Mae, and Swayze advocated for her to be cast. Zucker credited arguments from radio host Dennis Prager with deciding to "lighten" Rubin's original script with a moral message. Rubin noted that he "wanted to tell a ghost story from the ghost's perspective": "One day, I was watching a production of Hamlet, which begins with the ghost of Hamlet's father saying, ‘Revenge my death,’" he recalled. "I thought, ‘Wow, let's transpose that into the 20th century; it'd be an interesting story.’ And the idea hit me." Filming for Ghost began shooting in July 1989. Many of the interior scenes were shot at Paramount in Los Angeles. The interior of Sam and Molly's loft is a reproduction of the home and studio of artist Michele Oka Doner, built from plans she provided because she declined to allow filming in her loft. It was reconstructed in an unused loft nearby in her Soho neighbourhood and featured many of the same details as the actual loft, such as radiators around columns, open stairs and a house-shaped enclosure for the refrigerator. Filming of the apartment took place at 102 Prince Street, lower Manhattan. The exterior scenes were shot in New York City, particularly in Bedford–Stuyvesant, Soho, and Wall Street, for about five weeks. The film features about 100 special effects shots. Demi Moore's famous 'boy cut' in the movie was designed by Manhattan hair stylist John Sahag. The final scene used digital video effects. Originally it was meant to show Patrick Swayze kissing Demi Moore before walking up a mylar platform toward a bluescreen with grips in the shot. VFX supervisor Richard Edlund didn't think the audience would buy it and used Quantel’s “Harry” video-compositing system to combine the workprint with Swayze with elements that had been shot on an Oxberry animation stand and things like an endoscope of Christmas tinsel A masterpiece from the 90s movie era, which was a perfect date movie with a fully thought-out script and a director known for comedy and not drama.
