Good story…just OK main character
Book one is a good start to the series……I just think the author is making the main character way to much of a hot head pushing a toxic masculinity that really isn’t necessary……author could have made this a great book with a more creative thinking character who knows when to push a position and when not to…instead, the main character ALWAYS mouths off, ALWAYS picks fights, ALWAYS is self centered and arrogant…I’m reading it for the story now, but not because I find the character likable ……author should have made him less of a caricature of male toxicity and emphasized more pirate hero traits so that you can like both the story and the character…I find myself skimming through the hot head paragraphs to get back to the story…I bought all the books in the series, so I’m hoping that the author evolves the main character

Very unrealistic and sophomoric attempt
Very unrealistic and sophomoric attempt. The dialog is almost childish and shallow. The main character gets almost beat or tortured to death at least 5 times in the first third of the book. Of course there is a robot who can bring him back to full health in no time. The fight scenes are comical. This author has never had a fight or seen the result of a real physical beating. And the martial arts is ubiquitous and cartoonish.

Too much unnecessary violence and gore. Otherwise good story.
Good story but with excellent problem solving. Unfortunately almost completely hidden by gratuitous violence and gore. Hope the next in the series will tone it down.

Devoured it!
I found the beginning a little slow, but once through that, I devoured this book. The author has created a fantastic cast of characters, with humour and snark not often see in these types of books. The world building is great and the storyline moves fairly swiftly, once past the slow beginning.I love that this isn’t tech spec heavy, but rather relies on the strengths and interactions of the characters to drive the story.Definitely want to read more!

Disappointing
In the beginning I thought I was in for a treat. The imagery was great. Like "girls in shoes too high struggled to stay upright putting the leaning tower of pizza to shame." But I found the characters to be a little flat. I would have liked the main character to have more of a moral center - more conflicted with the morality of his choices right from the beginning. Putting a fork through a stranger's hand, no matter how much of a jerk he was being was uncool. Not like-able. Also, way too much of the "F" word. Excessive use of profanity is usually a sign of a lack of imagination and talent, which is sad, because this author obviously has both. I have little desire to read the next installment in this series. These characters are not people I wish to spend my time with.

Unique characters that you learned to love and distrust
Unique story that starts off with a very plausible alien encounter. Unique characters that you learned to love and distrust, making the story personal. The series was great, the goal Noble, in the end there was a twist, I'll only say that the right person ended it. If you love science fiction this is a fantastic story. I'm looking forward to 4,5 and 6.

Pretty darn good!
About 4.5 stars, due to errors that need fixing. However, I enjoyed the plot, the characters, the developing relationships among them, and appreciated their motivations. I will definitely be looking into the rest of this series. This isn't as slapstick as the Space Team series, but reminds me of it. If you enjoy those books, I think you will enjoy this.

Gritty and Humourious
This book was just plain fun to read. It has just the right combination of purpose of mission, humor and action that made it a great "SPACE OPERA". The author indicated that he was trying to fill a certain area of the genera that was just to little of. He succeeded. Worth the price of admission.

Loved it
I read mostly at night and if a book is calling me during the day to get back to it, then for me, it's a good book.I got the free sample, liked it and purchased the rest.It did bring to mind Guardians of the Galaxy at times but that's ok with me.The overall story was a thrill ride. I never lost the plot, the characters were engaging with loads left to explore and I would certainly get the next instalment to see where the adventurous crew go.Some of the interaction between the crew cracked me up. It was almost like I was there watching in person. Not too techie either. In sci-fi, stuff is different. It works and I don't need a blueprint explaining why it works..... it just does. All in all, loved it. Looking forward to the next one.

An interesting start
An interesting and exciting start to a series. I'm liking the characters and storyline so far and will be downloading the next book as soon as I finish this review. Just a few spelling mistakes and wrong words used. Some grammatical errors too but easily ignored as you are swept along with the story. Not perfect but enjoyable and fun. Cheers!

It is fun and uncomplicated.
Looking forward reading the next one, I have brought 3 so should get a good flavour by reading them. Story was enjoyable with a satisfying ending and the characters are a good mix, villains actually seem to be villains (whatever that means in my head). A worthy read to a space opera.

I will escape. 5 HANDY FORKS
Have you lost your senses, Earth man? You are a long way from home. Turn your head and look outside that portal. you are being taken to Dredar. It is a place of no return. It is what you humans would call prison. WOOOOWEEE! WHAT A TRULY SPACETACULAR BREAKOUT OF A RUSH AND A HALF!! I ABSO-FLARING-LUTELY love, Love, LOVE this book!! Right from the start you realize that Phoenix isn't your typical "hero", I mean, come on, he's holding up a small store, for *beep* sakes! But like most great books, you realize that everything is not as it appears, and before you know it you are halfway through the story, hanging onto every word, rooting for Phoenix and thoroughly & immensely enjoying every little bit of it! Except the zapping...or the p..a..i... Well, you'll see & understand when you get to that part! wink I love how the story is told, the way that we don't discover all of the secrets, how Phoenix's past - recent & growing up - is still being revealed at the end, and how Dom doesn't only shy away from having a flawed character take lead, but had me rooting for and really liking Phoenix through it all! I think it’s safe to say that I giggled, chuckled & outright laughed just as much as I gasped, cringed, held my breath, fretted & panicked! I may have even cried a time or two. Dominique has that perfect blend of humor, seriousness, action, "downtime" and most every other quality & quantity that keeps the story flowing, the reader engaged, cursing when they have to put the book down for "real life" moments, and eagerly ( & impatiently) anticipating – CRAVING - the next Space Outlaw fix! I love how greatly & perfectly detailed everything is! From the storylines & storytelling, the humorous dialog & descriptions that bring it all to life, to the numerous & varied species, including the "core" cast of well-developed, complex characters, and more! I think the author did a beautiful job with it all because it enhances, enriches and adds depth to the story without detracting from it in any way! I was instantly captivated, intrigued and BEYOND excited to tag along with Phoenix, to live his first space "adventure" with, through & as him, even if he does tend to speak long before he thinks!! LOL Dominique is one astronomically talented author who has created one helluva sci-fi series for the masses! This isn't one of those that is heavy on the "science" part, nor the technicalities of everything. It is a semi-lighter, humorous, character driven story that most everyone can read & enjoy right from the start, and it only gets better & better the more you read! “I need to know everything there is to know about Phoenix Jones. His journey couldn't end here. Not yet, not now.”
