Yay Gemma

I think Noel Streatfeild's Gemma series is generally underrated. The four books are all well worth reading and deal sensitively with issues of moving downward in the world (something that is happening to both Gemma and the father of the family she is staying with). As well, it addresses issues of professional vs amateur perspectives on performances, and follows Gemma and the family over several years.I like these books a LOT and think they are some of the better Streatfeild "non-Shoes" books. They are highly entertaining and enjoyable.
