Folks, this is Western Digital—and the name alone speaks volumes about performance, reliability, and industry reputation. I’ve been using the 16TB My Book external hard drive for the past two months, and I must say, it’s an absolute gem in the world of storage devices. There have been no performance issues whatsoever—no stalling, no bad sectors, nothing. While it naturally doesn’t match the speed of an SSD, the read and write speeds are quite impressive, especially considering its massive 16TB capacity. The build quality is excellent, crafted from premium materials, and it operates smoothly. However, one area for improvement is the packaging—it arrived slightly less intact than expected. Also, I feel the rubber feet could be made a bit taller to enhance ventilation. Although it already has a decent thermal management system, a slight design tweak could make it unbeatable. For those looking for extreme, reliable storage, this is a top-tier choice. Go for it without a second thought—very highly recommended.

The 14 TB one works like a charm many moths later. The thing with the large disks like these is how carefully you maintain them. I have got one portable 1TB WD passport from six years back and it still works fine. Also, unlike the slower internal drives till 8 TB capacity, all HDs with greater than 8 TB have faster interal drives. Do a quick Google search on Red vs Blue vs Black internal WD drives to understand what I am talking about. Also, I get a peak tranfer speed of 200--220 MB/s. My older 14 TB elements drive (couple of years old), clocks 150--160 MB/s.

Stay from Amazon for buying HDDs
Hi. Please stay away from buying HDD from Amazon. I purchased the WD 16 TB. The device was powering on but not detected by mac. In windows PC I was able to see it in disk management but it was not initialised. Tried that but it gave error device not ready. Downloaded WD utilities and WD discovery. The device was detected but could not erase and the run diagnostics failed. Called Aamazon customer service and they refused to replace even though I called on same day of receiving unit. They gave a WD service centre number where there is no response at all. Feeling very frustrated with the whole experience. One advise just stay away from buying HDD from amazon. Will upload whole story on twitter and youtube soon.

Excellent, but a little noisy
Worth the price, but I hear the disk spinning/tracking sounds every other minute. No complaints with performance.

Good, mammoth storage. Ventilation is an issue, though
Don't get me wrong - the ventilation is ample. But over the time, is gonna accumulate dust cause the way is designed to sit on the desk, the ventilation grilles are on top and bottom which is like inviting dust to come in and settle. You can put it face down - that way the cable connectors will be on top and vents on the sides - might be better for long term
