Yes the applause times out and stops. I cant remember if there are various versions of applause but I believe so, all the other "buttons" that I purchased have a variety. It does sound like real "canned" applause but the volume on mine was so low that I couldn't use it in the environment that I wanted so I stuck with the "Yes", "BS" and "That was Easy" buttons. It does not start and stop when pressed, it will play out.

Batteries included or do I need to buy? And what kind?

You'll need to purchase two AAA batteries. But the applause is more like white noise. There's a box of applause if you can up your budget.
