Hello, Thanks for your question. The thickness of 2 holes is thicker. The thin thickness between 2 holes is about 1/16" and the thicker parts are about 1/10". Will it hold cucumber plants

I am not sure about how the cucumber vines attach to the supports. The mesh is heavy enough to support cucumbers if it is attached to wood or metal stakes. I am using mine to protect a tree from deer rubbing it.

Can this be painted over?

I would seriously doubt that this can be painted over, as the fencing is very flexible and has a slight sheen to it, so my final answer is to not paint it.
