I took a piece of quarter inch rope hold it around the motor pulley and the Machine pulley pulled it tight and Thai a knot .next adjust your belt tension on your motor about two inches from the top of the adjustment Bolt .measure rope with cloth measuring tape good luck. that will give you a good approximation of belt length

Will this belt material leave black smears on my fingers?

Maybe, an old belt usually does leave black smears...old rubber and debris....a new one might from rubber dust
