Design at his best

An elegant collection of essays on various aspects of design which are bound together with an overarching theoretical perspective. The author’s contention - as expressed in the title - is that good design is about approach and attitude much more than it is about objects. The idea, originated by Laszlo Moholy-Nagy, is explored and expanded by the author who argues that it is not only desirable, but essential if designers want to make a significant contribution to the modern world. The case studies she marshalls to argue her case for ‘attitudinal design’ are ingeniously original solutions to seeming intractable problems and each is illuminating in its own way. They range from devising a way of allowing women in rural Pakistan to consult a female doctor remotely to projects which clean the vast piles of plastic polluting our seas. There are also elegant pieces on on the ‘hamburger’ icon, on the obsolescence of objects and fantastic anecdotal information such as how William Morris threw a teenage tantrum at the Crystal Place and the beauty of the Norwegian passport which displays the aurora borealis under UV light.The essays are expanded versions of pieces which appeared in frieze magazine - for those of us who don’t subscribe to such esoteric periodicals but are interested in the subject, this provides a panoptical view with an internationalist perspective - rarer than you might think - and an eloquent, rational, socially conscious approach which is welcome when sensation and bombast are in the ascendance.

Amazing, of the moment account of the state of design right now! Used it as a text book for my grad Industrial Design course at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn New York!

Una lectura obligada para los amantes del diseño

This is a fantastic book, really well written. It touches on all the contemporary evolutions in design but also makes clear references to the past masters. It has a wonderful cover simple but embossed.
