Using the crank to "wind up" a radio can be fun in non-emergency situations. This unit is certainly smaller than most, definitely compact enough (and without lots of small pieces) to be transported without damaging it. Built-in rechargeable battery is a convenient feature, as long as you don't misplace the included USB charging cable. There's no need to buy replaceable batteries, which other (larger) models do use as another powering option, but this one wouldn't even have space for. Besides plugging in, there's a small solar panel and the crank. Both likely useful in a pinch, but I suspect you'll get more and longer-lasting juice out of the unit by plugging it between uses where possible. In the long term, it will be interesting to see how the battery lasts. The controls are simple and easy to use. Given the size and price range, I'm pleased with both the physical sturdiness and the functioning of the unit. For such a small speaker, sound is very clear and, at appropriate volume, can be heard from a good distance away. It seems to pick up signals better--or, more precisely, with a longer, stronger range-- than my larger, non-emergency radio, particularly on the FM frequency where I do most of my dialing. I live in an area where reception can be difficult, so it's a delight to get in favorite stations that are further away. The only other feature is the flashlight, which is ideal for emergencies. Larger, more expensive models sometimes have other features.
