Somewhat disappointed with the details
I was excited about this book, as I love costumes, I love paper dolls, I love Queen Elizabeth I, and I love intricate coloring and sketching. Since purchasing it, I have enjoyed using colored pencils to shade and shadow these drawings to come alive with color. However, since I like to be historically accurate, I'm a bit disappointed that many of the costumes here are based on engravings, rather than paintings, so there's no way to know what the original colors were. Also, two of the dresses are nearly identical, as they were based on two portrayals of the same dress. In one case, a dress which claims to be "after the Armada pattern" resembles none of the famous Armada portraits such as the one shown on the cover.I should also mention that the dolls are only printed on paper, so they would have to be reinforced with card stock or some other backing to enable them hold their shape if you want them to stand up.Another thing that disappointed me was that several dresses were cut off at the edges of the page, and some of the details of the gowns seem to have been hastily drawn or left out completely. But truly the most disappointing thing of all, (being an Elizabeth R history buff) was that the dresses to be worn by the "young Elizabeth" doll were nothing the young Elizabeth would have worn. Indeed, many of them were worn by her only at the very end of her life. And one last complaint: the quotes and anecdotes throughout the book aren't often quoted with a source. So there's no way to know who said them, or when. However, in conclusion, these are very lovely and detailed drawings, and are all based on paintings or engravings from Elizabeth's time. Highly recommended for anyone who loves coloring fancy costumes, and who is not quite the historical literalist that I am. :-)

A Blast From The Past
I had this book when I was a little girl, as did my sister and my female cousins. My cousin asked me to get this for her recently as she remembered it so fondly. The drawings are beautiful and intricate. The paper is strong and smooth. We also enjoy the interesting facts written throughout the book. One can color with fine-point markers or even the InkJoy pens which we use.

History buff of Queen Elizabeth I
Queen Elizabeth I has always been a favorite of mine. I love that time of history and know a great deal about her and the events that surround her life. Thank you for having it available.

Fun, Nostolgic Toys
These paper dolls are so nostalgic; my sisters and I used to play with them all of the time. We collected them for years and I purchased these for my sister, for her birthday. I really think she will cry.

Details, details!
Huzzah! A book that lets the reader get up close and personal with the Queen of England's wardrobe. The pictures are well drawn, large, yet detailed. So many portraits of the time are sort of muddy-colored, it's hard to see the intricate details of QE's fantastic court dresses. This would be a wonderful book for a costumer, your favorite 'rennie', or someone doing research into the period.
