Too narrow but massive thumbs up for amazon return policy
This shoe probably deserves 5 stars as there have been several improvements to an already excellent design.Unfortunately this model is now much narrower than previous versions.I have been wearing xa pro 3d shoes for years for travel, hiking and occasionally running. I picked the 2017 model update and went for my first run. The shoe fits true to length but is now much narrower at around the centre of the shoe (around the arch/instep). I couldn't keep running until i backed the laces right off and removed the insole - even then they felt very squeezy. The same thing happened to a pair of Wings pro shoes I purchased so it seems that salomon has narrowed it's running shoe line.I am very disappointed as this was my go-to walking/ travel shoe and also great (if heavy) for trail running. The heel cup is the best in the business and it is still a highly stable shoe for running and walking. The shoe had improved its sole which used to be somewhat slippery but now has a more aggressive softer compound rubber. The lace pocket is also improved. I note that they produce a m+ (wider version) of this shoe which i will now purchase. Also, a massive thumbs up for Amazon who have agreed to accept a return even though it has been used, based on the model changing without notification of size change.

A few changes... and still one of the best!
I've been wearing Salomons for around four years now and they are still amazing. A few tweaks in this new revision: they done away with the inside loop/elastic band that was part of the Sensi fit, the tie cap isn't as big nor does it seem to be as thick as before and the tread pattern and material are different. I'll touch on those points a bit then give MY overall opinion of this new version of the shoe.About the inner elastic loop... I always liked it, but I know quite a few people who wear this exact same shoe and have never been fans... toes catch on it, feels like it right around your foot, etc. To me personally it provided a great bit of support in conjunction with the lacing system. With the toe cap, it just seems like they wanted to save a little weight and have the front of the shoe to be not as bulky. It still provides a great level of protection and does exactly what the old version did, it's just a bit smaller now.And lastly, the tread pattern and material. The new pattern is just slightly different, therefore it doesn't really affect the foot feel inside the shoe, a good thing if your foot is acclimated to the shoe type already. The new material does a remarkably better job on wet surfaces than the last iterations. My experience is with polished concrete and shop floors, so take that in mind.Overall I'm really pleased with the new product. Some reviews bring up the idea that they seem more narrow than the last, but I didn't seem to notice. Of course due to packaging, they come slightly molded inward, but just after a few times wearing them, they feel exactly like slipping into the past 4 pairs that I've owned.

A Subtle Improvement Over The Previous XA Pro 3D
The new Salomon XA Pro 3D is nice update on the previous XA Pro 3D. You can tell Salomon is going with the "if it aint broke, don't fix it" approach to this shoe. The first change from the last model is that Salomon removed the endofit internal sleeve on this new version. The second change is that Salomon upgraded the outsole lug pattern and is using their new Wet Traction Contragrip outsole. Traction and grip are much improved with this outsole. If you were a fan of the previous XA Pro 3D, you won't be disappointed with this updated offering. The XA Pro 3D has a stable and secure base, with a higher than average arch support, not found in many trail running shoes. Because these shoes are so stable and stiff, they are great for hiking and backpacking, but not so great for trail running. The durability and quality are very solid on the XA Pro 3D. I was able to get around 400 miles on two separate pairs of the previous version. This new version is looking to be equally durable.

Glad I made the switch from hiking boots to these shoes...
I picked up these Salomon shoes when I switched from hiking boots to trail runners. I had some good quality Asolo boots but I couldn't be happier with the switch to trail runners. My feet are way more comfortable in the Salomon's than they ever were in hiking boots. My feet are less sore and less prone to blisters over long distances in the trail runners. My typical pack base weight (just equipment without food or water) is around 15 pounds. The max weight I've carried when hiking with these shoes is about 32 pounds, and I had no issues with comfort. Another thing I really like about these trail runners (the non-GTX model) is the breathable mesh fabric they use. They really dry out fast even when they get completely soaked when fording creeks. Even my Asolo boots would talk forever to dry out just from getting sweaty from hiking all day, and they were GoreTex lined. My feet don't get hot or sweaty in these trail runners. I like the quick lacing system on these shoes too. The only thing about the lacing system on these particular shoes is the inside lacing loop at the toe of the shoe. For me, if I really cinch the laces down, that last lacing loop on the inside of the shoe puts some pressure on the top of my foot just behind my big toe. If you look at the photos of the laces, you'll see there is one lacing loop that is a lot lower on the shoe than the rest... that's the one I'm talking about. I don't think it's an issue with the shoe... probably just my feet, and as long as I'm careful not to lace the shoe up too tight, it's not a problem. As far as durability, these Salomons are holding up very well after more than 100 miles that I've hiked in them. I haven't been gentle with these shoes. I often hike on rough, rocky, and overgrown trails, so they take some abuse. I used some ICETrekker shoe traction devices on a recent hike where I hit some snow, and I think that the chain on the sides of the ICETrekkers may have caused some wear on the mesh near the toe of the shoes. After using the ICETrekkers, I found some small tears in the mesh on both shoes near the inside toe. I really can't fault the shoes for this since I'm sure they weren't necessarily designed for heavy use with shoe traction devices like I was using them with. The good news is that the tears haven't got any larger and I've hiked about 25 miles in these shoes since then. The grip on the soles of the shoes seem good in wet conditions and the soles show very little wear so far. Overall, I'd say these are comfortable and reasonably durable shoes. They are very light weight and my feet have been happy wearing them. The price is reasonable, and it's even better when you buy a pair in an unpopular color... like the bright green ones I have. I actually like the bright green color though.

AVOID - poor quality - waste of money
i found the product to be alittle bit smaller than normal. (i have been buying salomons for almost a decade) i found the quality to be of a poor standard compared to their other products i have owned in fact it was so bad i contacted them to see if they were fake only to be told after numerous e-mails and photographs that the product was real. The trainer had the quality of a £10 trainer you get from primark basically disposable trainer (1-6 months of use) and for the price i expect more. The sole is wearing much faster than normal i wear them for light use ( casual day to day walking and driving only) and i estimate mines will be useless in 6-8 months also the whole trainer is flimsy and weak no longer feel robust or sturdy I bought another product from them the gortex version which is more expensive and the same poor quality i now see salomons have went down the route of making poor quality footwear and dont care about what they sell or about the customer. I will now give up on salomon and buy another brand, my older salomon footwear are nearing there life after years of wear and have been good but there new products are terrible and a complete waste of money and are of fake poor cheap quality now. And i am not the only one on various forums everyone is stating the same poor quality at this rate salomon will close down or become known for selling crap. I would recommend people avoid buying salomons and spend your hard earned money on another brand

Sohle in Rekordzeit durchgelaufen

not the high quality it used to be
I have used this model for 10+ years both for extreme running and everyday shoe. Good for travel in warm places and hiking as well as good ventilation. I would probably go one size up next time from what I thought was my size. An update! The shoes used to last VERY long time like years but the last pair I hardly used and yet after less than 6 months they are ready to throw out as the heal is rubbish and giving me blisters - I guess things are not what they used to be with respect to quality ( I owned more than 5-7 pairs over the time)

Excellent shoes with an excellent fit
Excellent shoes with an excellent fit. Look quite compact and provide very good cushioning. I have found them very comfortable on practically any surface be it soft surfaces like grass or hard surfaces such as roads. The shoes felt slightly heavy in my hands.. But once worn, I found them quite manageable and light to run in. The body of the shoes curves around your feet to provide a good deal of support and cushioning all around. They breathe quite well and I felt no discomfort at all even on my first run. There was no breaking in required and they were good to go right away. I have never use lace less shoes before so this new method of fastening my shoes took a little bit of learning and adjusting but once I got the hang of it, it's been quite easy to manage. These shoes are also quite smart to wear casually. I absolutely love my new shoes and would recommend them to anyone who plans on running especially on hard surfaces which is where these shoes really set themselves apart from the rest.

MUD and WET weather! Shoe insoles collapse -wear not up to scratch either!
Good fit, good soles as expected by a seasoned Salomon trail shoe user having had 5 pairs of other Salomons previously.BUT... As soon as this model was used in MUD the insoles scrunched up and the shoes became unusable. See photos! Surely these are the conditions for which trail shoes are made?Very disappointed in Salomon...after all what are trail shoes for but mud and wet conditions. Other users also posted their similar impressions.I replaced the insoles with other insoles and problem solved. See photo. However - a further issue is that after only 400km of walking and running the shoes are wearing out! I'm only 85kg so an average user. Now using a much cheaper but better brand!
