The unicorns are fragile
As soon as we let these unicorns out of the barn we were concerned they would not be very durable. They are made of a hard plastic and the legs are very thin. My daughter really wanted them so we did not send them back but decided to see how it went. Well, it has been a month and one of the unicorns has a broken leg. We have not put it out to pasture yet, but if we cannot find the piece that broke off that may be our only choice. The barn is well made and easy for our daughter to carry around. The closure for the doors is an elastic that goes around a wooden knob. She cannot open it on her own. We also have the Melissa and Doug pony stable and in comparing the two, the Melissa and Doug stable set is definitely better. It is easier for little fingers to open and the horses are made of a more durable plastic. The draw to this Breyer stable was the unicorns, it is too bad they are not better made.

Breyer/ Melissa Doug comparison.
Over all, both brands are great depending on your priorities.Melissa and Doug (red) uses latch hinges with elastic, as overcut for the stall dividers (no kid will care) and has rabbit joints in different places than the Breyer. It comes with 2 more horses than Breyer that are very slightly bigger but quite indistinct beyond painting colors. The plastic seam line is a slightly more obvious in these.Breyer (blue, or purple for the unicorns) have ball and elastic latches, pin hinges, doubles of 3 different poses (down to the tail swooshes) all painted differently, more Matte or pearly paint (not just gloss) and more distinct musculature- but you get 6 not 8. They are not quite up to the larger size Breyer quality standards, but you can definitely tell an artistic difference from the Melissa and doing simplicity. Both stalls are quite similar in dimensions aside from number of stalls. I really don’t think you could go wrong with either. None of my girls (7,6,almost 5, 2.5 years) have complained about which set they got for Christmas. Upon inquiring of the eldest three, 2 would rather have more horses (M &d), one would rather have less but more distinctly posed horses (Breyer)

Poor quality - do not recommend!
Within minutes of opening it, one of the unicorns broke - and my daughter was not playing rough. I expected better quality from the Breyer brand. So disappointing!
