A couple cut corners, but an awesome value and a must for color. Recommended
I saw a metal salon tray with magnetic color bowls online, and I instantly wanted it. Well, I wanted it until I found it, anyway. You see, the one I ran across was a Framar unit, and that was priced at about $140! I mean... I WANT it, but not for that kind of money. Amazon to the rescue... a little bit of searching brought me to the DEER BEAUTY Salon Tray with 2 Magnetic Color Bowls. It's not exactly the same, but at $68.94, it IS half the price. So it's inexpensive enough, but is it any good? The Deer Beauty comes a flat-pack box. Inside you have a 5-legged base, the two pieces of the vertical support, the tray, two color bowls, casters, and some hardware. The base attaches to one of the vertical supports with a bolt an washer (wrench is included). The casters are press-fit into the base. The top vertical support attaches to the lower portion with a thumbscrew, and the tray attaches to the top support the same way. Assembly takes a few minutes. In terms of quality, the salon tray is decent. One thing is that the base is plastic, rather than metal. It's up to you to decide what would be better aesthetically, but objectively speaking, a metal base would have been better for keeping the center of gravity lower. You see, a metal base would have been a bit more stable - it also would have been more expensive. The tray is metal and plastic. The plastic is there for some versatility. For example, there's a place for your hair dryer, and some color brushes/tail combs/whatever. As helpful as that is, I'm still a little worried about what will happen if the cart ever tips over (taking me back to the lack of a weighted base). For whatever reason, the vertical support is spring loaded. I don't find that particularly helpful, but YMMV.As far as the magnetic thing goes, it's pretty handy. I don't love the included magnetic bowls, but I've found that you can just buy magnetic sheets (looks like the material on the back of some refrigerator magnets). You can just cut it with scissors and epoxy it to the bottom of your favorite color bowls (Framar, in my case). Deer Beauty touts that the underside of the tray an be used for storing your color bowls when not in use - I guess that's true, but it just seem very sanitary, IMO. Oh, I do strongly suggest taping a magnet to the bottom of your box of foils! It's awesome to never have to use a second hand to pull out your foils as you color.Despite my criticism, I do LOVE the Deer Beauty salon tray. It's a great buy, and a huge upgrade if you color hair without magnetic bowls today. Recommended
