Q: how many folders can fit in here?

I have 41 folders (with papers in them. You could do 50 and perhaps a few more. A couple of my folders are about 1/4" with papers. I love mine.

Q: Is the bottom mesh or a solid plate?

Hello, these have mesh bottoms. I like them, I have three of them and use them for my art supplies :)

Q: Is it stable standing up?

This is fairly well made and stands up by its self with nothing in it. However if you were to fill and it not be balanced it might fall over.
