Unreliable
I bought this product 2 winters ago for my 66 Mustang Convertible which I only drive occasionally. When I went to drive it in the spring, it wouldn’t shift into reverse. It turned out to be the new shifter. I sent it back to Hurst, they admitted it had a problem and repaired it at no charge (I don’t recall if I had to pay shipping or not). It took about 3 weeks to get my shifter back. I reinstalled the new shifter (not easy). It still wouldn’t go into reverse. This time, after hours of trouble-shooting, the problem was that the pin that moves horizontally needs to go into a cutout in the mounting plate. It was hitting the mounting plate. The cutout didn’t have enough clearance for the tolerance stackup of pin location. I had to loosen the mounting bolts and move the shifter, and retighten the bolts, and hope it didn’t move again. Now a year later, and with less than 500 miles on the new shifter, I can’t get into reverse again. It is a problem internal to the shifter. When examined on the bench, when you push it over to reverse, the 1 & 2 gear linkage is still engaged to the shifter arm preventing you from shifting into reverse (yes, I aligned the linkages with a ¼” rod). So now I need to send it back again. So if you buy this, be ready to spend time under the car replacing it and waiting for yours to be repaired. Keep in mind, the warranty is only 1 year. After the warranty runs out it cost $160 to get it rebuilt. I bought this shifter because I thought Hurst was a good brand. They have been making this shifter for decades. There is no excuse for these types of troubles. They should have the bugs worked out of it.
