It's a Pain, but Worth the Trouble to Lock in a Wandering Grip
The Start Right Tennis Grip Trainer is recommended by Clay Ballard at Top Speed Tennis. When Clay recommends a product, it’s definitely worth consideration. Visit the Top Speed Tennis site to see how Clay uses the grip trainer. The BadThey are sold by the dozen, including shipping this works out to about $4.00 eachThe product description and the instructions are worthlessInitially, it’s frustrating to correctly positionYou can’t use it during normal groundstroke rally practice because you must manually move the grip trainer to change grips. The GoodFinding and maintaining the desired grip may be the most frustrating aspect of tennis. To increase forehand top spin, I committed to move from an eastern to a semi-western grip. However, during games (and even low-pressure practice with a ball machine) although I concentrated on rotating to bezel #4 (semi-western), inevitably my grip would mysteriously wander back to bezel #3 (eastern) – opening the racquet face, reducing topspin and floating balls long. Of course, the equivalent situation happened on my one handed backhand. And volleys are a whole different (yet equally frustrating) story. I’ve always slightly rotated grips (about ½ a bezel) between forehand and backhand volleys; resulting in a mishit when I got caught in a grip change. I decided to use the continental grip (bezel #2) exclusively for all volleys with absolutely no micro-tuning rotation. But my continental grip never felt secure and comfortable for both forehand and backhand volleys, not to mention stepping back to hit overheads.Overall, the grip trainer has produced significantly positive results. After a few thousand ball machine groundstrokes and volleys with the grip trainer jammed (it’s never comfortable) between my index and middle fingers, I’ve broken old habits and reprogrammed my three major grips. To continually reinforce correct grips, I continue to use the grip trainer during basic one-sided groundstroke, and for volley and overhead practice. It still takes me a little less than a minute to change the grip trainer and fine tune it to the correct position. One important setup consideration (which should be, but isn’t part of the anemic instructions) is that lower knuckle of your index finger rests on the bezel pertaining to the desired grip. Since the grip trainer sits between the index and middle fingers, it will be positioned (depending on the size of your hand) one-half to a full bezel further than your index finger knuckle.A last word about custom positions - slice backhands and squash shots are usually taught with a continental grip. The grip trainer has provided a mechanism to discover that I can impose more snap and back-spin on my slice backhand by closing the face almost all the way to bezel #1. I determined this by setting the grip trainer for a conventional continental grip, hitting several dozen slices, and then incrementally closing the face. Without the grip trainer, I would not have had a reliable method to replicate enough slice backhands to discover the optimum position. A similar situation was true for my squash shots which tended to float.

Best device to achieve proper technique Exponential Growth achieved through proper grip
Most effective tool for teaching players the proper grip. Most players don't even know there are 15 shots that use a continental grip. If you never learn underspin, you are missing out on having a 3 dimensional game. Grip-rite works. Making the change is gradual, with focus on long term success. Not a quick fix, end result with an 11 year old junior girl with a severe western grip with 70% balls going in the net causing multiple unforced errors which made her run around and hit backhands! , Now Ivy League Collegiate player, 3 time state champion for state of Ohio.

Moderately effective.
It doesn't fit very snugly and is too long and wobbles around. Practice has to be pretty precise ...either forehand or backhand...or serve.

Easy to use grip trainer!
My kids go to the Nike Rod Schroeder tennis camp at Carthage college during the summer. Coach Rod always made these in a homemade way for the camp kids to learn and keep the "Continental" grip. He finally designed a high quality, long lasting grip trainer, available for purchase. My kids, Ari(15) and Alex(13) say that this device is comfortable and to please buy them because they understand what it has done for their game. "Change" is not easy and these grip trainers really help you remain in the correct position. I'm passing them out to our tennis pros, I'm so glad I found them! Use this first thing when you are learning the game to learn the proper grip and then you won't have to worry about "change"!
