Predator: Eyes of the Demon

A great anthology of stories, the release of which was engineered to coincide with the premiere of the latest franchise film, PREY.The stories are drawn from a diverse group of authors and provide an eclectic set of adventures. Of the 15 short stories, three stood out as my favorites.The first is “Little Miss Nightmare” by Peter Briggs. Briggs is known as the screenwriter of 2004’s HELLBOY. However, he also wrote the spec script for ALIEN VS. PREDATOR- which you can locate on the internet if you search for it. Unfortunately, his script was not the script used by 20th Century Fox for their 2004 film, which is a shame because Briggs has a thorough knowledge and understanding of the Predator and the franchise- something which is extremely evident in this short story. I enjoyed this tale very much because of how it weaved in elements of other genres- it wasn’t just a story about the Predators. This story includes the Predator as a component of a much larger narrative. And this particular Predator is an anthropologist, which is something we haven’t really seen before. As a result, the story is far more interesting because the alien scientist observes and comments on our race much as Spock or Data might hold the mirror up to humans in STAR TREK. This allows the Predator to be more than a simple, one-dimensional adversary. “Little Miss Nightmare” provides a thought-provoking commentary on the moral decline of our society. I was impressed with how much the author was able to say in this abbreviated format- and how much back story all of the characters were given.Another standout for me was “Lion of the Himalayas" by Ammar Habib. The story was reminiscent of GLADIATOR in the handling of its lead character; however, the plot was unique and fresh in this particular universe. Like “Little Miss Nightmare,” the narrative is focused on telling a larger story with the Predator constituting a piece of that composition. In this tale, the Predator isn't as developed as in some of the other pieces. In this case, the alien hunter simply provides an interesting obstacle in the protagonist's journey- but the journey is very compelling.The last entry that I’ll mention is Jonathan Maberry’s "The Fix Is In." This starts out as a more standard military tale, almost in the vein of ALIENS, but then goes in some surprising directions. Maberry’s concept of an operation of this type and the weapons and equipment of the future is extremely creative and his narrative style is very easy to digest. I enjoyed the characters as well and found myself wanting more of their adventure when I reached the end.These are just three of the entries in this wide-ranging collection of stories which help to broaden and enrich the universe of the Predator. Together with PREY, “Eyes of the Demon” ushers in a new and exciting chapter in the franchise.

It was very hard to put this book down. These are all original stories and it's hard for me to pick a favorite. I believe any one of these stories could be used as a reference for a movie ( hint, hint ) only because the authors thought out of the box. I'm a die hard fan of the Alien/ predator universe but I have to admit that the most recent movies have fallen way short of the original Alien and Predator. There's hope for the franchise yet! I'll even dare to say...who needs to go to the movies if they keep cranking out stories like these?

The book was little too short but the stories were great. I really loved the different eras and different locations.

A great way to daily enjoy a short story. I look forward to the next book. The stories stayed mostly to the plot of fare hunting and slot of action. Ill keep and read again later.

Really great book with varying stories. Hope they make more this way.

great stories for the franchise

I love ethe book it's a amazing collection of story's but if your a collector try to get a version with better shipping because there was absolutely now protection for the book

Short stories. Several excellent ones. Two sort of blah. I would say over half good ones. If Predators are your thing, definitely read. Otherwise recommend as lite SF.

I enjoyed this but the previous "if it bleeds " collection is better.

Very imaginative an a great introduction to new possibilities and different viewpoints . Some intriguing aspects that could be introduced to film media very easy or even based from a few of the stories. A enlightened approach to the Predator Universe with solid ideas and concepts. Every presentation was entertaining an none disappointed. A well rounded read on all fronts.

If you love the Yautja, the Hunter, the Predator, YOU WILL LOVE THIS BOOK.If like me, you are Predator mad, like CRAZY about the intergalactic Hunter, the history about these fascinating creatures and their ongoing drive to bag the ultimate hunt, then you will devour this book. It’s like watching many Predator films in as many sittings as you like and your imagination is the only budgetary constraint.I won’t spoil anything here but I will say that it is so refreshing reading about the Predator from so many different vantage points from such a diverse range of Authors and this opens up so many more possibilities with the Predator and that is beyond exciting.Read it.Visualise the stories in your head.Hear Silvestri’s soundtrack gracing each story.Hear that sound……that, CLICK, CLICK, CLICK, CLICK, GRRRRRRRRR…!
