Very well made kitchen tool
This works great for making Hasselback potatoes, the guides are made of what appears to be high quality stainless steel and he base appears to be hard wood. A potato up to 3 inches in diameter will easily fit in the guides. The wood base is unfinished so I used food grade mineral oil to seal it befor using. A straight bladed thin knife works best with this gadget. Think Turkey carver. This makes getting perfect evenly spaced cuts simple and fast. A great addition to my kitchen. I would, without hesitation rerecommend this product to a friend or family member.

Fancy presentation made easy.
Only used it once so far, however it made the potato prep really easy. I had previously been using two pencils as a cutting stop. While that does work, this is WAY faster and provides for very even slicing. Love this style of potato grilled and this makes it super quick to make.Cut it, nuke it for 4-5 minutes, brush it down with melted butter and smashed garlic and throw it on the grill. Turns out perfect every time.A lot of people don't seem to know about this style of potato and so when we make for guests, it is always a big crowd pleaser.

Not essential, maybe not even usefull
We love hasselback potatoes, but as chief cook and bottlewasher in our house, I do not always have the time or patience to make them. This slicing rack was a great idea to speed up the process and to have consistent results across servings. As for speeding up the process? Maybe slightly, but at the cost of cutting through the potato. As for more consistent results? Definitely. It is nice to have this consistency to ensure that the potatoes all cook at the same rate.Overall - I enjoy the slicing rack, but I could live without it.

I like this, my husband not so much
I love making potatoes with this, but my husband prefers simple baked potatoes. I use this for me!

An easy alternative to two wooden spoons
After fussing with two wooden spoons, holding the potato still and trying to get uniform slices, we purchased the Charcoal Companion Hasselback Potato Slicing Rack. It works perfectly as advertised. We've been enjoying the ease of use and the great look and taste of Hasselback Potatos.

MADE IN CHINA/UNKNOWN WOOD SOURCE
This actually works pretty well. I made these potatoes using Yukon Gold potatoes baked at 425 degrees with a little olive oil on top to help brown and then sprinkled with truffle salt when done. Simple but beautiful and tasty with minimal effort. And so much cheaper to make yourself than ordering from a high end restuarant. They were a hit. I do like the overall product but it is made in China and the wood source is unknown. If this were made in the USA and made of Olive Wood I would give it 5 stars. But this is a cheapened version of the ideal version. Picky about the wood because some woods are more susceptible to growing bacteria and mold when damp or wet.

Easy Hasselback Slicing!
This slicing guide is just what I wanted! Not only is this rack durable - it is easy to use! There virtually is little cleanup after slicing potatoes. The only suggestion I could make would be to add 1/8 inch ridges along each side of the slicer. In order to not slice all the way through the potatoes, I placed chopsticks on either side of the rack; these chopsticks tended to move, but careful observation and adjustment of the chopsticks was all that was needed to insure their being in place during slicing! This slicing rack has accommodated every size potato I have sliced using it and metal spikes on the base of the rack keeps the potato in place during slicing - this is a very nice aspect to this slicing rack. I recommend this slicing rack to any cook/chef wishing to prepare Hasselback-style potatoes for cooking!

Fancy Potatoes for Fancy Dinners
I bought this because I thought it would allow me to wow my friends with something different for special dinners . . . and I was right! However, while this device works as intended, it does leave a bit to be desired for how far down a knife is allowed to penetrate into a potato before the wood block/base stops it from slicing further. I have found that using chopsticks or copper straws (that I got with a Moscow mule drink set) on either side of the potato inside the slicing rack works very well in that it keeps the knife from slicing the potato too deeply. In this way, I'm able to keep a good base on the potato and keep the potato from falling apart after slicing. Now, I will say that while this device does exactly what I wanted it to, making potatoes this way is a bit time consuming for prep work and getting it ready for eating. However, that is NOT the fault of this device and overall I’m quite happy with it. Because of the prep time and time in the oven, I only make these for special occasions. I have put the recipe I use down below for reference and to give you an idea of how I make them. You can of course tailor the recipe to your own personal tastes. Enjoy!INGREDIENTS• 6 Russet potatoes• 1/4 cup olive oil• 1/4 cup butter melted• salt and pepper to taste• 8 slices thin cut cheddar cheese cut into 1 inch squares• 4 slices bacon cooked and crumbled• 1/3 cup sour cream• 2 tablespoons green onions• cooking sprayINSTRUCTIONS1. Preheat the oven to 450 degrees F. Line a sheet pan with foil, then coat the foil with cooking spray.2. Place a potato on a cutting board between two chopsticks. Slice the potato into 1/4 inch thick slices, the chopsticks will prevent you from cutting all the way through.3. Repeat the process with the remaining potatoes. Place the potatoes on the sheet pan.4. In a small bowl, whisk together the olive oil, butter, salt and pepper.5. Brush the olive oil mixture all over the potatoes, making sure to get some in between the slices.6. Bake for 50-60 minutes until potatoes are tender and browned.7. Remove the potatoes from the oven; let them cool for 5 minutes.8. Insert the cheddar cheese slices in between each cut of the potatoes.9. Return the potatoes to the oven and bake for an additional 3-5 minutes or until cheese is melted.10. Top each potato with a dollop of sour cream, then sprinkle the bacon and green onions over the top. Serve immediately.
