Fun. with a message
At first, I thought, another cartoon, I was wrong, its much more, not only is it funny but underneath all the fun, It gives the message, tech companies with too much info about you, are not your best friend, they make you think they're on your side, but really there on their side as long as it helps the profit margin.

This is how the machines will take over
It's great, shows that being odd , strange, different is the way to go, the odd balls save the day, And as an odd ball I needed to hear that

Masterpiece
I love this cartoon. The edition is full of extras for an even better experience of the entire masterpiece. The quality of the disc alone is perfect.

Netflix not Sony
If I had known this was actually made by Netflix, not Sony I would not have purchased it.

Great fun.
The Mitchell's are a dysfunctional family and stumble along as best they can. Dad and teenage daughter Kate hardly talk and when they do it usually ends in a argument. When Kate is eventually accepted at film school the family hope to bond and heal their wounds before she goes her own way. However just as their about to leave a new AI operating system decides to take over the planet. Can the Mitchell's save themselves and the planet?I must admit that when this Sony production ended up on the streaming service Netflix, after it was slated for a cinema release, I fully expected a rather lacklustre offering based on the little I knew of it. Although Sony Animation Pictures have upped their game in the last few years, it's was still hit and miss most of the time. So when I actually sat down with my family to watch it one evening I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of the animation which was gorgeous, the quality of the writing which was genuinely funny and often poignant and the assured direction which was on point and kept the action flowing. With Lord and Miller acting as executive producers (they made The Lego Movie and Spiderman into the Spider verse) you know you're in good hands. The story although generally done to death by Hollywood (teenage angst and family dysfunctionality) The Mitchell's seems at least a little fresh possibly because of the unusual animation style and the sense of fun instilled into proceedings. Although essentially a CGI picture, cell animation (I think) regularly invades proceedings, often helping to express the emotion felt by the characters. An acquired taste it may be but it soon becomes the norm and blends in. Mum, Dad, Daughter and Son are all relatable, but I must admit that daughter Kate did seem rather detached, self absorbed and quite frankly uncaring. Dad, an outdoors guy at heart, struggles with the digital world his family all seem to prefer to the real one. Mum, usually stuck in the middle could probably have done more to unite these different worlds, but does kind of come good in the end. Son, really could have been removed entirely as he has no or little impact on the story. Monchi the dog must be the dumbest dog ever put on film, but he does have a few funny moments. At one hundred and five minutes, this film is rather long and I must admit towards the end I did begin to clock watch just a little. It's not that it isn't good because it is, but I find that animated films generally can't hold audiences as well as live action and shorter ones tend to keep attentions better. It could have lost perhaps ten minutes from the first and last act which would have tightened everything up a bit.Although the animation style is quirky and the characters relatable, the main reason we enjoyed this film is because it was funny, very funny. Some of the dad-daughter banter and his efforts to understand modern social media were laugh out loud and are making smile as I write. His manic efforts to upload a file with a USB stick made me almost spit out my tea.So Mitchell's is funny, has lovely animation, relatable characters, is charming in it's way and contains a nice gentle message about family and it's importance, even if the end of the world is nigh.Great fun.
