Do i need this for the oreck commercial orb550mc or does iy come with one? thanks.

I called Oreck and they said the machine comes with one. 1-800-289-5888 is Oreck's number.

Is this the pad holder i need for my orb700mb machine to use with a terrycloth pad to clean very short nap carpet?

Yes, it's a piece of hard plastic that fits over the drum on the machine just like the scrubber brushes do then just set it on the pad, it has sharp barbs on it that will adhere to the pad.

Are these needed or do they also work with the Oreck ultra multi-purpose floor cleaner?

Buy several of these if you use multiple pads, makes it much easier to get good results, particularly on laminate floors. We use a three pass method and get great results, 1st pad to apply a50/50 solution of vinegar and water, a second buffing pad to finish cleaning and a third pass to polish with a lambs wool pad. Get great results. We don't have a multi purpose machine, don't need one.

is this pad holder needed for every attachment, like the polishing bonnet? what needs to be purchased to make an operational unit for waxing buffing

At the bottom of their home page, Oreck http://www.oreck.com/ has provided a link to the list of user guides for their products. Thinking that I needed one of these also, I bought this pad holder as an accessory to the floor machine but, one was also included with the main unit.
