Q: Will these work to replace a 5v 2.1a usb port on an external battery bank?

yes this will work. i used mine to connect to dc to dc buck converter to reduce voltage to 5v a 12 v battery for charging phone or tablet when power goes out.

Q: Is there some housing the usb 3.0 male one is supposed to fit into? there isn't enough 'meat' on the back to even pot it securely that i can tell.

These have a plastic piece that 'flips' over and covers the connections and sort of holds the wires. Once I soldered the wires it seemed to be ok in strength, but not much on the back to secure the wires once attached. I used these for a usb connection that would not be plugged and unplugged often and they seem to work fine for my application. I have unplugged/plugged them a few times and I have not had a problem.

12.0mm x 0.5mm x 14.0mm Pin 1 is ground and pin 4 is HOT

Q: Does the connector indicate which color wire goes where?

Mine only came with the parts, no schematics, etc. You can find the schematic online if you know what your wire colors mean though.
