Did not need an undercoat - just applied a first and then second coat and let it dry for a full 24-48 hrs. In total I kept it dry for about 3 days. The previous tenant left a chip the size of two quarters that was filled in with regular paint. It was chipped down to the black. I tried the rustoleum kit which was white--the tub was not. The tubs manufacturers sticker was left on the front of the tub so I was able to figure out that it was made by bootz. Their website recommended Porc-a-fix. I applied 3-4 coats and wet sanded with 600 grit wet sand paper in between each coat and allowed each coat to dry 24 hrs. at the end buffed with an old soft white t-shirt. I can't even see where the repair was! Buffing with the t-shirt brought the sheen up to the same shine as the surrounding porcelain! Hazmat shipping makes this a one way purchase so be sure how much you need. It does have a shelf life so keep it cool and tightly capped for storage. Current formula seems to be thinner than previous formulations.
