Servant Of The Mind

Probably to most fan’s taste it seems.
If you liked the other albums by Volbeat then you will probably like this one too, as it is in a similar vein of fast-paced music with Poulsen’s distinctive vocalisation which really lifts this out of the mundane.T1 is typical of the sort of musical style that you would expect from this band and hence is a very good opening to the album.T2 is another past-paced but short track in rock n’ roll time signature, another very listenable number.T3 is the second longest on the record but with a uniform repetitive underlying beat that doesn’t change much throughout the song, except near the end and generally the track is only given some interest by Poulsen’s vocalisation.T4 Another number with a repetitive underlying beat – not one of their greatest.T5 Begins slowly before switching to a fast tempo which carries the listener along nicely.T6 Is another fast-moving number which is very much in the typical Volbeat style.T7 Is a track that grows on you, not bad at all.T8 Has a guest female vocalist on it, who doesn’t really enhance the listening experience as she sounds like any number of unexceptional chanteuses.T9 Is a short track delivered at speed but with a fair bit of repetitive unimaginative guitar playing.T10 A good foot tapping beat with some more interesting guitar playing for a change, one of the better numbers here.T11 Starts off with a Death Metal type introduction and continues with an underlying thumping beat, counterpointed by Poulsen’s singing. Ends with standard up and down the fretboard guitar playing.T12 Again, a heavy introduction with a repetitive bassline beat, again given life by Poulsen’s singing.T13 This is by far the longest track here at nearly eight minutes long backed by an insistent repeating beat. The length allows for some guitar soloing, but the player doesn’t seem to have the imagination to warrant this particular attention. The last minute is played out to the sound of a bell tolling against the rain – it sounds like. While ‘Outlaw Gentlemen and Shady Ladies’ grew on you the more you listened to it, this has unfortunately the opposite affect and you start to notice that the only really good aspect of this album is Poulsen’s singing and that he really needs a group of better musicians to back him.Overall, 5 stars for Poulsen’s vocals and 3 or less for the general lack of variety and imagination of the guitar playing.Though this is very much a minority view as everyone else seems to rave about this latest album.Playing time is just over 61 mins.

Return to form following a lacklustre couple of albums
Although they had their moments, I found 'Seal The Deal...' to be somewhat going through the motions, and 'Rewind....' was trying too hard to water itself down in the hope of mainstream airplay. This sounds much more like Volbeat being Volbeat again, embracing the more metal sound, whilst keeping the balance of the more 'pop' elements to a more acceptable level.... everyone's a winner!

Amazing album .
This album is heavier than the last one and more like their older material and it’s better for it . Highlights are , The Sacred Stones , Shotgun Blues , Becoming , Lasses Birgitta , Mindlock . In a nutshell it’s another brilliant album from this group , their music is addictive .
