Its not on them to expect it to be anything like a wired surveillance system
Ill Give it 5. Its not on them to expect it to be anything like a wired surveillance system. Please do not be silly and expect any wireless camera system to work just the same and record the same way! Before buying this product you need to ask your self what your looking for. Do I want something that will make a sound/alarm , then notify authorities in the event of fire or break in ? Or Do I just want a simple home surveillance system to send me alerts for any activity during the night or away ? If you are looking for both, this is not the right product for you. If you are fitting more into the second question. I'd say look into this. 1. Do not expect an instant connection. It does take a few seconds to buffer. If this does not bother you -then no big deal. It does not personally bother me, and knowing how things work over wifii you can not fault the company for this. They do connect and hold connection with 1080p quality. 2. It does have a Delay in time. What your seeing (depending on internet connection and speed) Can be anywhere from 15- 30 seconds behind. In most cases this shouldn't matter much. How ever in the event of an emergency it can be detrimental. But note this is not something I would say can replace an Alarm system. If that is what you are looking for. This is not the product for you. This is simply a Camera system that is smart. Use I would say best is to catch home burglaries/invasion, Pets, animals, kids. ect It does have emergency contact features, but these are not automatic based on a fire or break in. It only records people or movement and lets you know. 3. It does work well. All of the features Canary offers seem to work very well. It works well With alexa. It certainly picks up people , It seems to be pretty accurate when your home and not home. 4. Subscription. As of now. They are offering 9.99 a month for the service. Id say the service is absolutely worth it and a must have, if you are investing in this as a home security system. If you just want to keep an eye on pets. Their free service is more than sufficient. Their basic service offers a lot id say for free. You get 24 hours to view any recordings. It will still let you know if it spots anyone. The paid service enables the talk feature. 30 days to view videos and save them(you can not save clips with free service). So all in all. I do recommend this Product. With the understanding this is not going to be the same as having a wired surveillance system. It does not record all the time. It only starts recording once it picks up on someone or something moving. It is able to identify people and animals. It works very well in the dark. with 1080p. Ya really cant beat it. They do also offer emergency contact features in the app in the event of an emergency. Its a nice little system to have in your home. It is most certainly better then nothing. More than sufficient. I would put it more towards the easy way out for a surveillance system. Also battery life last about a week or more. Depends on how much stuff it keeps picking up / recording. If you can figure out a neat way to keep them plugged into an outlet , I would do that. If not battery mode is just as good.

Device problems, Corporate Ethics problems: Avoid!
I purchased this thinking it might be a good idea, but it was definitely not. Anyone who is looking at this, I would avoid purchasing, not just because the device isn't very good, but because the company is very poor. My biggest complaint is that they TOOK AWAY FEATURES that existed and put them behind a pay wall. Yikes! 1: The device. The canary has a nice form factor, but it has a nice glowing ring when its recording video. Awesome, let's point out to all intruders that we're recording. So cool. Additionally, the motion sensor seems to be on the bottom, so placing this on a window sill or the like will expose the camera to record, but three inches below it is is the motion sensor, so that's hidden and so it will never record. Next, the motion sensor is FAR too sensitive. I've tried turning it down in their (incredibly clunky) app, but to no avail. I still get notifications when a car drives by on the street 100 yards away. (My camera is facing my front porch, from inside my house). 2: The company. THIS IS MY BIGGEST COMPLAINT. Previously, the device would record video from motion detect to motion stop and show me it. It also had a feature called "Night Mode", where I could be home and the device would record video when I was sleeping. This was on a free account. Guess what? They removed those features and put them ONLY in their PAID membership. REMOVING existing features? That is a poor business practice and terrible customer service. I guess they can't innovate anything new for their paid members, so they're going to try to force the paid membership down everyone's throats by REMOVING features! These features are part of the reason I bought the device, now they're removed. 3: The app. I'll just copy-and-paste my google review: So this is a great concept and a relatively poor execution. I'm only going to talk about the App here, not the actual device. The app is.. finicky. There are some basic UI design choices that I don't understand: 1) why does it take my entire screen, including covering my notification bar (Samsung Galaxy S7)? I would like to see my other notifications, including the current time, while I'm viewing the app. This should be an easy fix, but its there, and its weird. 2) I'm confused why this is designed like an "endless scroll" webpage and not like the standard UI. When I'm in the "timeline" view, if I flick down from the top of the page, it takes me to "Home". In every other Android App ever, a downward flick at the top of the page is "refresh", which this sorely needs, which leads me to... 3) Why can't I refresh the timeline view? It doesn't refresh by itself, ever. I have to exit the app (and I mean actually close it, not just home-key) and restart it to update the timeline. I'm assuming this is an MQTT interface, so this shouldn't be difficult to auto-update... Additionally, and I'm running out of space here, I'm ALWAYS getting "Cannot Connect to Server". Ouch. All in all, my advice is to avoid Canary at all costs due to their crappy corporate ethics. I spent $200 on this thing and it is now worthless because they removed features. I know its in their EULA that they can do this, but damn... imagine if Apple removed FaceTime or Google removed Maps and put it behind a pay wall suddenly. Ouch.

We love our cameras, they're reliable. They're very minimalistic and they blend in with their surrounding (camo-style). CANARY releases updates and bug fixes to the app regularly.

I bought two of these after having bought an indoor Canary View that worked fine, because I wanted coverage of my driveway and back garden. Small but robust devices that were reasonably easy to set up and install, I was initially quite happy with them. Then the trouble started…..the battery life is utterly terrible. No matter what you do. You can operate these wired to power but the point of having wireless cameras is so you can put them where you need them to be - not just within 3 metres of a power outlet. Mine are deployed where they need to be, both are within about 4-5 metres of my router and are set up for minimal detections to maximise battery life (I am often away during the week for work). These cameras take over 12 hours to charge - you’d assume battery life (especially on the settings I’ve used to minimise detections and prolong battery life) would be in the order of weeks. Yet both of my cameras last less than 24 hours. One of them requires completely removing from the app and re-installing every time the battery runs down, as a new camera. I have no idea why. I have had weeks of interaction with Canary Customer Support, tens of emails with multiple suggestions from them - which basically amount to making sure I’ve plugged the charging cable in properly and not much more. I actually suspect the support emails are being received and replied to by a Bot of some kind because they are largely nonsensical, repetitive, don’t track the thread of the conversation and do not help at all. I’ve done everything that canary support has asked me to do - including forcing the cameras onto the 2.4Ghz SSID of my router which they said would fix things, (I knew it wouldn’t but did it anyway) but that actually made things even worse. I am now going round in circles with their support emails and have had enough - I will be returning these cameras for a refund as they are simply not fit for purpose at all. It’s a shame because for the brief amount of time that they are up and running, their ability to detect motion and narrow it to people is great and the IR night vision mode is not bad at all
