Hario V60 "Mugen" Ceramic Coffee Dripper, Size 02, White

I'm really enjoying having this option for my pour over coffee. I've been using the standard Hario V60 for many years now, and it's great for making my normal 20 oz daily cups. However, sometimes if I'm having coffee later in the day...or if I only have time enough for one cup...then this new Hario option is awesome, and the stronger brew it makes tastes great. Following the instructions, you will make an 8 oz cup that is stronger than the standard 16:1 water-to-coffee ratio. By my calculations, I'm ending up with around 9:1 water-to-coffee ratio. I know I could adjust to get a different result, but I kinda like the stronger result...especially if I'm only going to have 1 cup. I got the plastic version, and it snaps apart for cleaning.

I've owned my standard V60 for probably close to a year and decided to give this version a shot. Although it's much slower, it is also less finicky than the standard V60. It gives a much much stronger cup without tasting overextracted like I sometimes get when I mess up brewing on my V60. I'm a huge fan of this brewer and it might replace the standard V60 for me going forward. Do yourself a favor and get the CAFEC ABACA or T-90 filters, they are especially important in a brewer like this that doesn't have as many ridges to allow drainage.

as the title says: with the mugen I've experienced slower drawdowns and more chocolaty cups with most medium to darker roasts. I don't quite get my favorite results with super light roasts, but a lot of the roasters local to me roast way darker than I typically prefer. as such I found a lot of success with this as I found it to produce better and more consistent cups with those coffees. I didn't do any extensive testing or fancy refractometry but I definitely liked what I got in the cup. Like a lot of people I bought one to swap it into the Hario Switch base, don't do that, the heat retention isn't worth the slower drawdown for steep and release.

I like the Muga. But I’m into low or no bypass brewing. ( I use Sibarist Fsat filters with it.) It fit right into my Hario Switch. Further it works very well. I do pour a bit more preheat/ rinse water in before brewing. But I’m a big believer in non plastic brewers. The ceramic Muga does very well especially with iced coffees I’d buy one again. I also am comfortable recommending it to others.

I've been using this every morning for the past 15 months. I use it alongside my regular v60 to make 2 cups. I prefer this version over the old design - the coffee drips a little slower, I can taste the extra extraction. I also prefer the design of the base, it fits better over larger mugs. No cracks or other issues from long term use. Between all my coffee brewers -- V60, V60 Mugen, Hario Switch, Kalita Wave, Chemex, AeroPress, Phin -- This V60 Mugen is my favorite.

It is what it is- A Hario V60 with a slower drawdown time. If you only follow the Hario recipe by Tetsu, you might be unsatisfied. If you like to experiment, it’s capable of doing all kinds of v60 recipes when you figure out how to dial it in your grind/temp for the slower drawdown. It may not be for everyone, but I do think it has a use case. Some coffee may actually taste better through the Mugen than a standard V60. I’m debating whether I like natural process coffee better through this or the standard V60.
