John Dolan: The Perfect Imperfect: The Wedding Photographs

I knew I loved John Dolan’s work but I was surprised at the quality of the book itself. It is gorgeous and beautifully made. The paper and print quality is so well done. The photographs speak for themselves. John is a true artist and deeply in tune with the moments and gestures of his subjects.

John photographed my parents' wedding in 1992 and they specifically requested this book for their 30th wedding anniversary. They're not even featured in the book, but they're in love with his work!

I can’t recommend this book highly enough and the body of work inside is an important sliver of history. Photos are badly composed, out of focus. Very disappointing. Even the printing was poor quality.

This book is so beautiful that I've had to devour it in chunks, and I still find it difficult to fully absorb. Some photos are moving enough that I gasped aloud. It is a poignant reminder of the sanctity of photography and the importance of savoring the fleeting moments. John Dolan is a truly gifted photographer and a golden-hearted person, so turning the pages of this book is to drink up the decades of moments he has so insightfully observed. It makes for an impeccable gift, a table book for a quiet guest house, or a conversation starter in any living room room. For myself, it will sit in my studio to encourage only thoughtful and intentional work, as Dolan has clearly spent his career seeking for himself.

I've followed John for a little while now. His work is moving, unrivaled, honest. I've been a wedding photographer for over a decade and I've felt the soul of weddings diminish over that time. I don't want to be left with wedding photography becoming "just a big vat of cheese". For those craving more depth and artful storytelling, get the book. Don't even think twice about it. John- if you're reading this, I'm gonna take you up on that beer soon. Cheers.

As a wedding photographer I see the standards and demands for perfection in weddings rising sharply. This is now expected through the way we photograph too. Whilst understandable to a degree it’s taken the soul and spontaneity from the wedding event images. A day that should be perfectly imperfect. John is keeping this realism alive in the most authentic way. I am so inspired by his relaxed yet meaningful approach. The book itself is beautiful, the print quality is stunning and timeless. I genuinely thought this book should be worth hundreds of dollars. Truly a great artist.
