What is the torque rating for this hinge?

I do not know the torque rating. But the hinge works well, as per specs (calculations of weight and height etc...calculations that can be found in documentation of hinge)

Two questions. 1. Can you use these on upward opening lids like on a kitchen bench seat lid? 2. do you need one hinge or two on a lid 40" long?

1- Not sure. I have used it like it is supposed to (like the picture). Just from top of my head, I would think it would work on the upward opening. But the calculation (weight-size-etc) are critical, and I would not know how to do the calculations for upward opening. I don't think the instructions provide calculations for upward opening.2-All depends on the calculation, and like I said, I would not know how to calculate that.Keep in mind that there is a kind of shock absorber in it (like in your car, suspension and trunk). And calculations are critical....if too much weight, it will close too fast with a bang, and if not enough weight, it will not close at all. Worked perfectly well for me after doing my calculations for a kitchen cabinet door opening like in the picture.

Would this work for the back of a. House lounge ?

Not heavy duty enough for that type of application

Can these hinges be used in an outdoor covered area? are they rust resistant?

They are chrome, not galvanized, so I would discourage outside use.

Good if you can figure out insulation

Very good hinge for those over head cabinets that won't stay up. This was a bit of a challenge figuring out how to install. Instructions were horrible.

I built a cabinet, and the lid rests horizontally, and lifts vertically, and it still slows the descent. It really is amazing.
