Nice materials, several serious use issues.
After having used this futon for company on two separate occasions since purchase and assembly, I feel that I can give it a fair review. I also reviewed my assembly process (including watching the videos for assembly on youtube under the "Epic Furnishings" account) and verified that I had completed assembly correctly. The materials for this product are very nice. The arms are solid, sturdy and well-manufactured, the mattress is high quality for a futon mattress and the frame and hinges are also well made. Assembly was time consuming but that's no surprise. The instructions were just fine and I had no issues with putting the futon together. It took me a few hours. Having an adjustable power screwdriver with an appropriate sized hex head and extender bit was a big help. As to use, this is where the issues come in. Switching from couch mode to bed mode is relatively easy for me. My first big issue is switching between bed and couch modes. I'm a big strong fella and it's almost impossible to get this thing back into couch mode (with the futon mattress in place) without giving myself a hernia and going through some crazy logistics. You would think they would have product tested this feature or at least put a notice in the product description. Trying to convert back to couch from either the front, the sides or the back results in the frame folding about 10% and then the entire piece of furniture coming off the floor. I've tried quick-snapping it, slow easing, gentle encouragement, pressure on the central fold through the futon, and basically to get it shut you have to mess with it for a few minutes until it finally reaches the point of no return and folds properly. Please keep in mind that I'm tall (6'3"), have long arms and I'm pretty strong, and getting this thing closed is a major mission. I can't see an average person getting this thing closed by themselves at all. It's a 2 person job. Not a big deal, but even with 2 people it's not elegant. You still have to mess with it a lot before it finally folds. The second issue is that the bed is not level. My floor is level (I checked), but when the bed is unfolded, there is a substantial leaning toward the front/seat side of the futon. It's substantial enough that both of my guests mentioned it independently. Yes I was using them as guinea pigs and didn't mention it beforehand. I've tried a few things to get the bed level and in the end, the only thing that appears to work is to raise up the front legs an inch or so with wooden chocks. The problem with this is that the leg/stand that supports the front of the bed is then about 1" above the floor and also needs to be chocked up (after the bed is deployed) to give proper support. Big hassle. At this point, I can honestly say that if the bed wasn't so huge, and if the disassemble/return process wouldn't be such a nightmare, I would return the futon. I think I could live with the unfolding/folding issue, but the leveling issue (and the inelegant, ugly fix) makes the bed a bad purchase. As a futon couch it's fine, but I didn't need a couch. If Epic Furnishings gets back to me either via this review or if I'm able to find contact information for them (I've been looking with no luck), I will update this review. If there's no update, that means that I was unable to resolve the issues and my review stands.

Happy with purchase
Purchased this futon for a spare bedroom. Was very hesitant to purchase, since no reviews, but the mattress type sounded superior to what I was finding online at this price point, so I took a chance. Everything was packaged well when shipped and the items arrived without incident. The futon went together easily and the thing is very sturdy. There is no wiggle to it at all. The arms are wood and the remainder of the base so black metal which feels durable. Our last futon had thin wooden slats under the seat that the kids broke when standing on. That shouldn't happen with the metal base. The mattress is moderately firm, but comfortable. Great for both sleeping and sitting. the mattress cover is alsoremovable, so it can be washed. Overall, very pleased with the item.

Don't buy it
I am furious. The overall futon is decent, very comfortable. We liked how sturdy it was and guests said it was comfy to sleep on. HOWEVER, the cover is said to be removable for easy wash. After transitioning it from our guest room where it was hardly used to our mainroom, I needed a wash. So I unzipped the cover and washed it. When I go to out the cover back on everything is falling apart. The inside of the cover isn't completely together it's just a bunch of fluff stuffed in it, around some springs. Trying to keep it all together while putting the cover back on was impossible and lead to the zipper breaking. A near $600 futon just done after one attempt to wash the cover. We have family coming in tomorrow and have no couch or place for them to sleep. Just don't buy it. It's not worth the money.

Sturdy, but flawed
I was also nervous about purchasing this futon, but I am glad I did. It took me about 3 hours to put it together. I was by myself, which is why it took so long. If I had another person, it would have been faster. Some of the metal pieces were a tight fit, and some of the protective coating they put on the metal needed to be rubbed off before it would fit. I use tools and build things on a regular basis, so this wasn't a problem for me, but could be frustrating for someone who is more of a beginner (ie. my sister would have thrown it on the floor in frustration, cried, and then called me, her younger sister, to come over and do it for her). The frame and arms do feel very sturdy. The people that would sleep on this are heavier, so I really needed something sturdy. I have not slept on it yet, but the mattress feels very comfortable and is great to sit on. The mattress does have to be removed to change the positions, at least for me and I am pretty strong. The only downside I find is when you sit on the edge of the futon in "couch" position, it will tip forward. Also, when the futon is in "bed" position, one side is fully on the supportive frame, but the other side extends out leaving nothing under it. Because of this, the side that extends out will fall to the floor if someone lays on it without another person on the other side. I solved this problem by putting a small stool under it to give it support. I am fine with this solution, but some people may not be happy. This is my first futon purchase, and I am not familiar with them at all. But, in my research I found other people complaining about futons that tip, so I was sort of expecting it. At any rate, it is hard to find a decently priced futon that is queen sized, and sturdy for people who weigh a lot. So, in spite of its flaws, I am happy with the purchase and would recommend it for someone who is willing to do something similar to support it on the one side.
