Great first Lionel set for a 6 year old!
No complaints. The train set is great. Everything works properly. Simple to get going. Love that it comes with a few extra couplers!

Remote didn't work
Put new batteries in and the remote wouldn't even turn on. Put another set of batteries in and hold the device just right and it turns on intermittently. When the train doesn't sync with the remote it makes an awful beeping sound (which would happen every few seconds). Sometimes the remote was on and connected but the train wouldn't actually move, just the noises would work.Try explaining to a 4 year old that the train that Santa set up around the tree doesn't actually work and we need to send it back to Santa's Workshop to be fixed.Wouldn't suggest buying, spent $170 on an unusable product.Track is nice and big and train cars are good quality. Was bigger than expected. Nice to look at.You will need 6 C Batteries for the train and 3 AAA batteries for the remote.

Excellent Item
For around $100, this is an excellent item for children, around the tree, outside on a deck or patio.The train runs perfectly forward/backward on the track and the functions work great (sound).We bought extra track and turnouts because I do custom modeling and plan to make this set much more stunning in a 1/18 scale layout. The train negotiates the turnouts perfectly by removing the screws.. The train itself opens and closes the turnouts and causes the direction to change in a looped formation.If you just want an excellent around the tree or outside train that any kid can operate - then this is the one!

Lionel New York Central Ready-to-Play Set on my READY TO PLAY GARDEN Layout.
I must admit, when I purchased my first Lionel Ready to Play set ( The Hogwarts Express), I was a little dissapointed that it did not run on LGB 45mm track. These sets come with their own gauge track( slightly wider at 50mm). However, I decided to go with it and build my garden railway with READY TO PLAY track, getting extra track packs via amazon. Since then I have purchased the Thomas Tank Engine Ready to Play and this NEW YORK CENTRAL set. I have also purchased points ( switches) to add an extension later. So overall, I am more than impressed and hope Lionel adds more to this range. I would like to see some extra wagons and coaches sold separately, as these locos are quite powerful and can pull far more than what comes with the sets.
